Edward Johnson, a 19 year old Motor Machinist's Mate second class, arrives home on a nine day furlough after two years in the service including nearly a year in the South Pacific. He trained at Farragut Idaho and served aboard an LCT taking part in eight invasions. He brings home a Jap rifle, coins, and a white sail jacket as mementos. Hermit of Guam Tweed files for divorce in San Diego
Chief Radioman George Ray Tweed known as the hermit of Guam, after hiding 31 months from the Japs, reunites with wife and two children in San Diego and immediately files for divorce. His wife and child ren were evacuated from Guam in October 1941, and Tweed visits Portland with cousin Mrs. John Minard before arrival.

High School Opens. Registration Planned by Students
School Superintendent Harry Holt announced mandatory registration for all high school students on Thursday and Friday, August 31 and September 1, to arrange subjects for the opening date. Dance Nets $300 For Hospital Benefit Dance
About $300 was raised at a hospital benefit dance Tuesday at Blinn's hall. Bartender's Local 875 sponsored the event with Navy providing the orchestra and Victory Cafe arranging the buffet lunch. Bill Wright the dance chairman thanks patrons for support and notes the crowd enjoyed the evening.

Receives Word Of Brother's Death In Normandy
Staff Sergeant Norman Hawkinson, 25, brother of Mrs. Sigrid Wodlinger of this city, was killed in action in Normandy on July 25. He had served since the war’s start and left New York in May. Three other Hawkinson brothers serve, one in Italy, one in the States, and another formerly in Alaska now in Seattle. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. O. Hawkinson of Great Falls Montana, his widow and one child live in Salem Oregon.

Scow Makes Trip Heine Berger Arrives For Anchorage
Heine Berger arrived aboard the Kasslos this week with a scow in tow and departed yesterday bound for Anchorage. Freight included two cars owned by Warren Taylor, two by Jack Hendricks, a car and truck owned by War Hollman, and Koeh's Pronto Pup wagon. Passengers were Harry Wolff, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith, and Carl Hollman.
