Sales Tax Ordinance Set for October Adoption

The Kodiak City Council, with one vote against, approved the first reading of a sales tax ordinance effective October 1. The measure defines a ten mile tax radius and includes ambiguous exemptions. Two more readings are required as meetings remain open to the public.

Three Bands Tonight at Cancer Crusade Dance

Tonight the Cancer Crusade Dance runs at Elks Hall with three local bands. City Dudes perform at 8 30 led by Roy Bruner, Casino Trio follows at 11 30, and Waialeale Brother and Sister provide Hawaiian music at midnight. Positions Open in Navy Alaska Repair Jobs

The United States Civil Service Region opens applications for Office Machine Repairman and Automotive Body and Fender Mechanics with the Navy Department at Adak and Kodiak Alaska. Pay ranges from 2.96 to 3.20 per hour at Kodiak and 3.10 to 3.36 per hour at Adak. Applicants need at least three years experience in the position.

Stevenson Is Demos Choice Stevenson Is Demos Choice

Adlai Stevenson won the Democratic presidential nomination on the first ballot with 905 votes, far surpassing the 686 needed. Harriman trailed with 210, while seven favorite son candidates shared the remainder. Pennsylvania’s 67 of 74 votes pushed Stevenson over the top as the auditorium cheered. Kefauver captured the vice presidential nomination on the second ballot amid shifts from Kennedy supporters.

Enrollment Begins Soon For Fall Term At Public School

Enrollment for fall term announced by School Superintendent Ivor Schott. High school pupils enroll August 27–31, 9 am to 4 pm, with a $5 book deposit. Kindergarten to grade 2 enroll August 27 9 am to 12 noon. birth certificates required. Grades 3–5 enroll August 28. grades 6–8 August 29. New high school dedication is September 9 at 2 pm with tours after the program.

Pack This Year Far Below Normal

Fish pack totals for the season reach 233,890 cases with an extra 10,000 estimated for recent canning. Species breakdown shows Reds 27,992 Kings 154 Pinks 199,641 Chums 53,695 Cohoes 2,408. Last year pinks alone reached 525,332 cases, while two years ago 382,000 cases were canned.

Deer and elk hunting seasons opening in Kodiak area

The Kodiak Afognak Island deer season runs August 20 to October 15 with a one buck limit. Elk season spans September 1 to 20 with a single forked-horn bull limit. Hunters urged to save lower jaws for aging data, with jaw returns coordinated by Will Troyer and Ray Mullens. Ptarmigan season August 20 to April 15 at 20 birds per day. Bear season starts September 1 in the Chiniak Peninsula area and September 20 elsewhere on the island.

Major and Mrs. Douglas Ross and family plan to depart next month for Washington D C. The Major, officer in charge of the ACS office here, has been nominated as ACS Liaison Officer with headquarters in the Pentagon. He arrived here on November 30 1954 after prior service in Seattle.

Majestic Sinks In Shelikoff Straits With 9402 Sailions Aboard

The Majestic fishing boat sank about 12 miles off Wide Bay in the Shelikoff Straits Sunday morning after crew attempts to save her failed. John Jorgensen and deckhand Jorgensen Jr along with engineer Lars Myhre first noticed a leak Saturday morning and tried calling the Coast Guard without success. Boats Popeye and Banshee aided but had insufficient pumps to rescue her. She sank Sunday around 9 with her cargo of 9402 sailions. a starboard patch applied after a prior accident appeared intact as the vessel listed and went down. The cause remains undetermined.
