A two page petition from residents of the Mission road area urged council action on speeding. The group cited dust, hazards, and muffler issues, seeking strict enforcement of the 25 mph limit. Council agreed to deploy a patrol and to enforce the speed limit, while authorized purchasing a new dye panel truck for police use.
The Kodiak Community Center hosts a Saturday masquerade ball on August 24 with boys and girls in costumes including princesses clowns and colorful characters. Prizes will be awarded for originality activity and humor. Tickets go on sale Monday with a 60 couple limit and committees led by Mr and Mrs Charles Madsen and Dr Mrs A Holmes Johnegan coordinating promotion and music.
The Cordova is due next Wednesday and the Denali on Thursday the Alaska Steamship Company reports. The Sakina, originally not slated to call here, has been altered and is now due at Kodiak tonight or Sunday morning.
Milt Vokacek, city superintendent, resigns effective August 15 to pursue private business. He has sold the Mulford sheet metal shop on Brooklyn Avenue to Hollis Mulford. Paul H. Stover, ex Army Engineers, named to Vokacek’s vacated post. Building permits issued to Ray Sears, Mrs. Ben Nachtweih, Leif Norman, Charles B. Johnson, Chester Clark for various remodels and additions with estimated costs.
Del Meader of the Navy Base defeated Henry Breckberg 21 to 14 to claim the Wodiak Horse Shoel Championship on Sunday. Breckberg had reached the finals by upsetting defending champion Burt Flotre 21 to 12. The doubles event was postponed due to rain and will be held at the Center tomorrow, along with an extra singles tournament. Play starts at 5 pm.
Basil Clark of Clark's garage filed a building permit for a new 60 by 58 foot frame garage on the north 68 feet of the Thompson estate lot on Brooklyn avenue. Estimated cost is $7000.
Douglas Dawson twelve son of Mr and Mrs R E Dawson tumbled off the dock with his bicycle near McConaghy s cannery Saturday morning but suffered only a slight cut on the mouth His bicycle sank in several feet of water and Douglas hung onto a boom until aid came He had ridden up to a protective beam along the dock and put his foot on it to steady himself when his foot slipped throwing him and the bicycle in a 14 foot drop to the water The bicycle was recovered.
Iver Malutin delivered a game deciding single in the last half of the final frame as Emil Christoffersons Cubs edged Ray Wade’s Terriers 11 to 10. Home runs by Billy Anderson and Elmer Dean highlighted the high scoring battle. Softball games are scheduled for tonight and Tuesday at 6:30.
The Kodiak assessed valuation increased over last year by 79 993 50 dollars. This year's total is 2 253 794 50 with land 344 411, improvements 1 026 810, and personal property 382 573 50. Tax notices are mailed and the city council sits as board of equalization next week each evening from 7 to 9 pm.
Harold Foster, who ran a car into a dwelling on Mission road, was charged with drunkenness and driving under liquor influence in two complaints filed by Leo Sears. He received 135 days and a suspended $300 fine on the first charge, and 90 days with a suspended $200 fine on the second, both ordered by Commissioner G W Bubendorf.
The Russian Women's club sponsors a benefit dance at Blinn's hall on Friday September 6. Admission is two dollars per couple and dancing runs from 8 p m to 1 a m.
Kodiak opens the Community Center library with evening hours Monday to Friday from 7 to 9 and Wednesday and Sunday afternoons 2 to 4. The 4000 plus book collection was prepared by volunteers led by Mrs. Marjorie Gunderson and Sister Hilary. Staff includes Louise Coon Lillian Lamme Dorothy Haag Mabel Fenner Gertie Raumaker Ruth Torgerson jamel Owen Bette DeYoung Margaret Cook Sister Hilary and Chester Clark. Annual library card fee is 1 with two week loan periods and five cents per day for late returns.
Art Kizer suffered a cut to his left eye Tuesday evening when a glass shard from his glasses struck him as a stick he held slipped. He was treated at the base hospital that night and remained hospitalized at GM hospital until yesterday, with a full recovery expected.
The Shopper Service station wagon, once owned and operated by the Teamster's Union, has been bought by Tom Gallagher of the Polar Bear cafe and will continue on the same maintenance schedule.
Mrs Bette De Young announced today that the Warren A Taylor office on Brooklyn avenue is closed and G W Bubendorf will handle the insurance business formerly there. De Young is temporarily employed in the Commissioner's office.
Delegation led by Delegate I L Bartlett and including Warner Gardner and William Zimmerman Jr met 40 residents at the Community Center in Kodiak. Mayor Bettinger urged speedy acquisition of the city dock to spur future prosperity, and Gardner pledged a Washington review of the dock status and swift appraisal if surplus. Councilman James Martz cited land shortages hindering progress.
Standard Oil will bring a new 198 000 gallon storage tank to Kodiak arriving about Sept 1. Merrill Coon local agent announced the tank will ease repeated winter oil shortages. Eldon Davis of Seattle oversees construction with foundations now being prepared.
