Protest Shipping Of Bristol Bay Salmon To Japan

Governor William A. Egan and Senator E. L. Bartlett urged the State Department to use all resources to halt Japanese purchases of unprocessed Bristol Bay salmon bound for Japan for final processing. They cited reports of Japanese vessels unloading at Astoria, Oregon, and loading unprocessed salmon, arguing this violates the spirit of the North Pacific Fisheries Convention and calling for prompt action pending treaty interpretation.

Boy Scouts End Encampment at Naval Station Camp

Eighty two boys attend the Scout encampment at the Scout campsite on the Naval Station. The encampment ends tomorrow with a Court of Honor at 3 30 pm Saturday to officially close it. Public invited. boys will be advanced in scout ratings. Camp housed in tents with thirty boys. Scout executives Joe Rayfield and Jerry LeBarron call camp a great success. Rayfield is hospitalized with blood poisoning.

A strong earthquake was recorded by Spring Hill College seismograph with primary waves at 1 45 48 a m CST and secondary waves at 1 54 49. The epicenter is believed to lie just south of Rat Island.

Lease Sale May Spur Development in Alaska Basin

Hawk Exploration Co. and Anchorage Gas and Oil Development Inc announce purchase of a substantial interest in 48 000 acres of oil and gas leases in the Kenai Cook Inlet basin. An option exercise would assign acreage leasing drill rigs shops and camp facilities at the current site. Anchorage Gas and Oil retains a substantial working interest and royalty with Hawk as technical and managerial operator.

Boy Scout Fund Drive Planned for Saturday Morning

A city wide canvass will be held Saturday morning for a Boy Scout fund drive. Doug Preston chairs the effort with a large group of volunteers. Joe Rayfield, Anchorage Scout executive, says funds are urgently needed and will largely fund local Kodiak equipment.

Committee named to study state purchase of Wickersham home

Gov. Egan named a three person panel to probe state acquisition of the Juneau home library of former Delegate Wickersham as a historic shrine. The group includes Miss Helen Dirtadian state librarian Richard Cooley research analyst and State Supreme Court Justice John H. Dimond.

Plan for Bottom Fish Survey Off Prince of Wales Island

JUNEAU The Bureau of Commercial Fisheries will begin an exploratory bottom fishing program in the unfished area off Prince of Wales Island. The project will be led by Chuck Connelley of the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries in Juneau, formerly a FWS agent in Kodiak.

Compensation Fund Balance Increases

The Unemployment Compensation Fund balance as of July 31, 1960 was $1,832,000 per Merrill E. Weir director of the Employment Security Division. The fund rose in July as contributions exceeded benefits. July 1960 current benefits paid were $131,000 versus $211,000 in June and $213,000 in July 1959, a month over month and year over year decrease.

Voters may declare party preference before obtaining a ballot but are not required to do so. The rule allows opt in while preserving ballot access for all electors.

Firm To Reduce Freight Rates

Gov. Egan noted the Puget Sound Alaska Van Lines proposal to cut rates nine percent for groceries and other items in Alaska. The Maritime Board approved the change on July 29, but Egan wasn’t sure if the reductions were in effect. He urged other carriers in the Alaska trade to lower transportation costs as well. The Seattle based firm serves the railbelt areas of Northwestern Alaska.
