Port Wakefield Cannery Shooting Fatality In Alaska

Gary Lee Wakefield, 15, accidentally fired a .22 revolver while examining it, killing companion Gary Boutson, 20, of Peshastin, at the cannery in Port Wakefield. A coroner's jury ruled the death an accident as witnesses testified to a loaded chamber and a high chest entry, with the gun misfired during handling.

Police arrest 2 car thieves in Kodiak theft ring

Chief Roland Vickery reports a theft ring operating in Kodiak has been broken after the arrest of two teenage servicemen, Eugene Colbert and Robert South. Three cars and a large amount of automotive equipment including tires tubes and batteries were recovered. Many residents reported stolen vehicle parts from Island Lake, with most property identified and returned. The youths await trial in the City jail, and the Chief expects more involved than just the two.

Eastern Star Grand Matron Visits Alaska Chapters

Mrs. Florence A. Plummer of Fairview Village Pennsylvania, the Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, is visiting Alaska chapters. She supervised a special meeting, will conduct a school of instruction, and attend social events during a five day visit culminating in a banquet at the Masonic Temple Sunday evening.

Mrs Clark Injured On Mountain Climb

Mrs Dorothy Clark was injured when she slipped on ice during a Saltery Cove climb with her husband Basil. A Marine rescue party carried her 140 miles to a Naval Station infirmary, where X rays showed a broken ankle before transfer to Griffin Memorial Hospital Kodiak.

Polio Shots Given Today and Next Two Saturdays

Polio vaccine clinics set at the Health Center on August 4 and 11 from 10 to 11 a.m. for children who had first shots in June and July, with a third clinic on August 18 for ages 1 to 14 lacking two shots. Harold Stover To Tour Europe

Harold Stover will leave Kodiak for Europe Sunday August 20 to visit Norway Sweden Denmark and Germany. He will be met in Norway by Mrs Ragnar Hansen and then tour the region before returning to Kodiak early in September. Stover is an ARC employee and works with his brother Paul who is superintendent for the agency.

Fire Destroys Project Home in Aleutian Homes

A house at 1190 Circle Drive in Aleutian Homes burned Monday around noon. Mr and Mrs Buster Richardson lost furniture and belongings. Wallace 11 attempted to save a sewing machine. Fire started in the heating unit closet, neighbors aided, Voluntary Fire Department controlled blaze in twenty minutes. Ervin 13 was away at Scout Camp. no insurance on personal effects.

Chiniak Worker Dies Of Heart Attack At Sea Station

Chiniak man Meyer, a worker at Chin iak for S. S. Mullen & Co., died Thursday noon from a heart attack. The Sea and Rescue department at the Naval Station alerted at 11:53 a.m. Dr. A. W. Stevenson of the Station hospital and Cmdr. D. Oliver sent a CG plane to the project arriving shortly after. Meyer was pronounced dead at 12:08. His home was on Route 2 Edmunds Washington.

Waterfront calm as Kodiak fishing industry stalls

The waters near Kodiak show a quiet week with little fishing activity. Cannery output is sporadic with King Crab Cannery striping two half days, Island Seafoods quiet, and Eskimo reporting 8000 for canning before a grounding incident. Frank McConaghy calls the season the worst yet.

Tender Eskimo Runs Aground Off Cape Barnabas

A cannery tender named Eskimo ran aground in heavy fog off Cape Barnabas near Sitkalidak Island early Tuesday. Four crew members escaped unharmed to shore. Captain Frank Landahl led the vessel on a 8000 fish cargo en route to Kodiak from Island Seafoods, with crew including his wife, Robert Rank, and T. K. Beeston. The Alexander rescue boat aided two crewmen then waited by as Chuck Turner and Otto Olson coordinated further efforts. Continued on page 9.
