Primary election plans clarified as filing closes. Candidates for U S Senate and House, Governor, and Secretary of State listed by party and district. Alaska set to hold its first state election with multiple statewide and district offices on August 2 and August 26.
Kim Clark a former Fish and Wildlife Service biologist and notable Kodiak figure filed as a Republican candidate for the state legislature. He currently resides on the Kenai Peninsula and plans to return to Kodiak soon.
President Eisenhower proposes a United Nations backed Middle East summit with Soviet Premier Khrushchev around August 12. He calls for a top level meeting, naming indirect aggression as a real issue. The meeting could be in New York or another city but not Moscow.
The Kodiak Telephone Company seeks rate increases of 75 tents and 1.00 on domestic calls and 2.50 on business lines. O K Kincaid outlined assets and liabilities, noting current charges fail to cover operating costs or debt from expansion. He said the company started a wide expansion program for future demand, but this has not materialized.
City employees choose to negotiate a tentative wage increase without Local 302 Oper ating Engineers. City Manager Bill Poland reports the scale was drawn up and approved by the group. Eugene Blondin of the union attended and sought delay to confer with employees..union officials claim the men were bought off while others push for living wages and benefits including sick leave and vacation pay.
Four bids were submitted for the city garbage collection contract and Milton Smith proposed adding a rider to use a private cat to push debris over the dump bank. After an executive session the council reconsidered terms and awarded the five year contract to Howard McLinn despite two identical 68 percent bids and a higher 73.5 percent bid from Charles Johnson not considered.
Dora Riggins, public health nurse, says office hours are 8 30 a m to 2 noon with consultations available. A weekly well child conference for children under school age runs Wednesdays 2 4 p m starting August 6. No appointment needed. A prenatal class for expectant parents begins in September. contact Miss Riggins at the Health Center or call 4731.
A Honolulu 1 A missile with an atomic warhead was launched Friday from Johnson Island into the Pacific skies. The test shot lit up the heavens and was seen in Hawaii about 700 miles east. Estimated peak altitude reached around 100 miles, with the craft believed to be a Redstone ballistic missile.
A tuna identified by biologists and fisheries officials near Kodiak created excitement among FWS staff, fishermen, and cannery owners. The 15 pound fish, 27 1/2 inches long and 19 3/4 inches in girth, was caught at Wide Bay by Lloyd Cannon aboard the Juno while seine fishing for salmon. It is one of the first tunas recorded this far north and may be a skipjack. The fish was not labeled as albacore, and officials note tuna migrate widely from warm seas.
This week in fishing circles the overall picture remains steady with a lone fish stirring more interest than a boatload. FWS figures show 158 475 cases last week, with over 102 000 pinks and 7 000 from Cordova and the Chignik area, Cordova enjoying a real harvest extending to August 6 possibly longer. Cook Inlet expected to set new records with 68 602 pinks packed by July 26, total salmon across varieties reaching 172 445 cases. visitas from FWS officials and biologists noted, while shrimp studies report the John N. Cobb in Kodiak waters for an eight week cruise to map shrimp distribution and species offshore.
