The plant, once said not to operate this year, was ready within 24 hours after the go ahead. Oil Fire Destroys Ketchikan Pier and Warehouses
A fast spreading blaze at the Stan dard Oil Company pier in Ketchikan destroyed two warehouses the company office and employee housing along the water front. Firemen saved large oil tanks and three small storage tanks as about a million gallons of petroleum products were lost. The fire began around 730 am from an unexplained cause and Coast Guard fire boats fought the flames as drums of lubricating oil exploded. no injuries reported.

Salvage Effort Underway After Afinity Capsizing
Navy deep sea divers aided in salvaging the fishing vessel Afinity which capsized off Cold Bay after its skipper drowned last week. Divers attached lines, the Pavlof hauled the craft to a dock at Thornbrough Air Force Base while crews searched for Robert Gould Jr. in the wheel house. The Afinity sank in 18 feet of water after a line snapped amid heavy seas.

Local Man Sentenced To Year In Jail
William Hand was sentenced to one year in the U S Federal Jail after being found guilty on three counts of larceny and intent to defraud. Sentences were three months on one charge, three months on another, and six months on the third. The crimes involved issuing checks to Clark's Garage The Town Club and Kodiak Airways without a bank account. Chief of Police Ovid McKinley commented on the trial. U S Commissioner A M Vokacek presided. the complaint was signed by McKinley.

Plane Crashes On Afognak Lake
Charles Hamilton piloted a 65 hp Taylorcraft that crashed at the end of a small Afognak Lake on Afognak Island. Passenger Rick Cooter of the Alaska Department of Fisheries walked away with Hamilton. Both men were uninjured. Hamilton described a trial takeoff, a near collision with trees, and a controlled ditch that saved them.

Wizard Sinks Near Humpback Rock
The 65 foot halibut schooner Wizard sank in 75 fathoms off Humpback Rock near Woman's Bay while towed by a Navy tug. It had run aground June 30 on a reef at Narrow Cape. The Navy tug Mahopac also grounded during rescue. The Mahopac was buoyed free and dry docked at Kodiak Naval Station. A later salvage took the Wizard from the reef but it sank again. The vessel was registered in Seattle.

Mrs. Frank E. Driscoll of Ivanoff Bay was flown 640 miles to Griffin Memorial Hospital by a U S Coast Guard PBY after lye poisoning was reported. Capt.
