Hollandia Airfield Fell in Pacific Campaign

Morning Fire Damages Hawkins Home on Mill Bay Road

A Monday 4:22 am blaze at Carl Hawkins residence between Martin Jensen and Norman Noble homes on Mill Bay road badly damaged the interior. Hawkins suffered minor burns escaping with only the clothes on his back after the fire started from an oil stove. firefighters battled the stubborn fire for about 40 minutes.

Secretary Knox Dies at 70 in Washington Home

Secretary of the Navy Knox, aged 70, died of a heart attack at his Washington home shortly after attending the funeral of his partner J. A. Muehling. Acting Secretary Forrestal announced the death over Navy loudspeakers, pausing department employees to pay respects.

Alaska Liquor Suppliers Sued For 285000

Treble damages totaling 285000 dollars were filed in federal court by the OPA against two Alaska liquor suppliers and three individuals for overcharges exceeding federal price controls. Firms involved are K and L Distributors owned by Jack Kessler and Irving Levine and Alaska Distributors owned by Alfred Shuman. Alfred Krauss stated Alaska Distributors offered to settle but was rejected.

Style Show and Musical Program at Orpheum Tuesday

A free one night show at the Kodiak Orpheum featuring a Style Show and Musical Program by the combined grades and high school. Miss Georgya Wilbur directs domestic science dresses with Navy handkerchief novelties and skit presentation. Army Post orchestra provides music with a Navy and Army flag number. Rotary Club underwrites expenses.

Mrs Janet Jacobs and her daughter Joy arrived aboard the Sakina this week from Seattle. Mrs Jacobs, active in payroll and tax work in Seattle for ten years, will join the office of Mrs Catherine Blankenburg as book keeper.

Council Combines Fire, Police Jobs in City Shift

The city council created a combined Fire Chief and Police Chief role, appointing Jack Allman to start May 1 with a $400 salary, equal to the former two separate chief salaries. Water and Sewer Superintendent Charles Hopp is set at $350, clerk salary remains $200, magistrate salary $20 plus $1.50 per case, patrolman $300, one patrolman position cut. A restaurant liquor license petition was refused, and Marshall Crutcher was hired for the annual audit.

Freight Run From Anchorage Drives Southward Tow Boat

Heine Berger hauled the Kasilef with a barge in tow from Anchorage this week and departed Thursday with freight for Anchorage. The cargo included a cat owned by Joe Rouse two buses a station wagon owned by Basil ONeill moving to Anchorage a truck and shop equipment belonging to William P Smith who has spent the past years there.

New School Head Named By Board

Harry Holt of Homer was named school superintendent for Kodiak for next year by the local board. Holt, who previously led Kodiak from 1931 to 1934, came from Bend Oregon and saw the first Kodiak high school class graduate during his earlier term. He later served as Seward superintendent and taught last year in Uomer. He is married with two children Edward and Eleanor, is a World War I veteran, and has long participated in community activities.

Local firms plan new Anchorage openings by boats

A plumbing and sheet metal firm has operated in Kodiak and will relocate to Anchorage. The Wm. P Smith family Basil O’Neill family and James Scott Walton departed by boat, heading to the new site.

Frump and Pavloff United in April Wedding

Eugene Frump of the U S Navy and Agnes Pavloff of Kodiak were united in marriage on April 24 by U S Commissioner C C Naughton. Witnesses were Dorothy Tibbles and David Garton.
