Hair Sealskin Industry Could Be Big In Kodiak
A meeting at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game offices led by Zane Ney of Alaska Seal Co. discusses a potential 50,000 skin per year sealskin industry in Alaskan waters including Kodiak. Direct purchases, fixed prices around $8-$9 a skin plus a $3 bounty, aim to keep profits with hunters and avoid middlemen. The venture plans a nationwide buying network with Kodiak added as a pickup site only when incoming furs justify it. Average yearly income could reach $11-$12 per skin with six weeks of suitable hunting left this season.
