Elks Lodge to Install Anchorage Members This Weekend

Members of the Bills Club will form a new Elks lodge this weekend. Over 50 Anchorage Elks arrive by special plane for ceremonies including charter presentation number 1772 and officer installation. Visiting Elks are billeted at local inns and private homes with six initiates. A reception, guest registration, ladies social, buffet supper and dance are planned.

Bob Hall Flies Seabee From Gulfport to Kodiak

Bob Hall piloted a Seabee from Gulfport Mississippi to Kodiak Alaska arriving Wednesday evening. He had planned to acquire a second plane in Seattle but routed south for the model he wanted. En route he stayed in Edgely North Dakota to visit relatives and endured five days in Cordova Alaska due to bad weather.

Power Outage Hits Ko diak During Construction

The Ko diak downtown district lost power for about two hours Friday morning while workers set poles for a new redistribution system along the old line. Plant manager Leon Johnson said outages will continue for a few weeks with ample notice and a possible generator ready. radio station WVCQ will relay announcements when outages occur.

VFW Drive To Aid Cancer Society In Alaska

The local VFW post sponsors a fundraising drive for the American Cancer Society in Alaska. Alaska is a divis ion of the society and 74 percent of funds stay locally for cancer care while the rest goes to headquarters. John McLaughlin post commander said jars are placed around town for contributions and the drive ends by the last of April.

Martin Jensen Heads to Seattle on Brief Vacation

Martin Jensen, recently recovered from a heart ailment, left Wednesday for a brief vacation in Seattle. He was joined by Mrs. Jensen's mother, Mrs. Oss Galbreath, who returned home after several weeks' visit.

Halibut Season Opens May 1

Fish and Wildlife agent Mark Meyer says opening day is tentatively May 1 with the same quota as last year. Roy Lindley arrives to take Meyer’s duties, as Meyers plan to move to Juneau after school ends. Mrs Meyer and younger children remain away.

Pilot Falls From Open Plane Door Over Alaska

A Sourdough Air Transport pilot died after being sucked from a C 47 door shortly after takeoff from Annette Island en route to Anchorage. Dave Huydeke of Los Angeles was the third pilot aboard as Coast Guard and aircraft conducted a search. 10 passengers were on board. Mr and Mrs William Lamme traveled to Raymond, Washington after learning of his mother’s death.

Russian Easter Services Tonight at Midnight

Russian Orthodox Church prepares for midnight Easter rites with Senatent Malutin leading in place of a priest. Father Gerasim Schmaltz will conduct services at Ouzinkie. Good Friday services were yesterday and Sunday worship is at 4 pm. Mrs. John Malutin invites all to attend.

The Nenana ice pool expects a record haul this year with a predicted prize of 185000 dollars, 35000 more than last year. The 40 inch thick Tanana ice under the tripod on the river remains intact with guards posted near the site.

King Brothers Plan Cannery On Barge

The barge Josy owned and skippered by Bill King is being converted to a floating cannery. Al and Robert King assist in this summer operation while Lois Anderson and the Denali Bill King arrived from Seattle. Three applicants appeared before a city committee seeking the position of superintendent of streets and city utilities: Milt Vokacek, Reuben Tesaik, and Mike Williams. The appointment will be made Monday at the council meeting.

Work Starts At Dock On Kodiak Ice Plant

Construction of the Kodiak Ice and Cold storage plant at the city dock began Wednesday morning with Al Long as construction superintendent. A pile driver prepared by Harry Sanders will drive piling for the deck and fish shed. Long will perform concrete penetration tests before architects finalize drawings. Materials are on hand or due by future boat arrivals, with Wallis George, company president, expected this weekend.

Miller Baby Dies in Hospital

Services were held at St. Mary's Catholic Church for 16 month old Alice Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Al Miller who died Thursday morning. The infant had been at Griffin Memorial Hospital about a month and had been ill briefly. Burial was in the local cemetery. Survived by parents and an older brother Ronald. Mr Miller is a partner in the civilian cafeteria at the base and formerly owned the Victory Cafe. He is a patient at Seward Sanitarium, moved there from the sage hospital earlier this week.

St Marys Parish To Meet Thursday

A meeting of St Marys Catholic Church members will be held at 7 30 pm Thursday at the community center. The church choir was hosted by Father Louis B ink at a dinner Wednesday night at the Montmartre Inn.
