Services Held For Student Lucy Gregorioff

Funeral services were held at 2 pm at the Russian Orthodox church for Lucy Gregorioff eleven year old student in Kodiak. She died after a two month illness from tuberculous meningitis. Survived by her mother Mrs Lucy Brown and sisters Lila Cleo and Anona all of Kodiak and Susan of Portland.

Three Juveniles Arrive From Afognak to Await Disposition

Three juveniles arrived here Thursday from Afognak after causing trouble in their village. U. S. Commissioner G. W. Bubendorf and Welfare agents asked Anchorage district head Margar et Pielage for guidance. She required more information before advising, likely to return them to Afognak until plans mature. Previous transfer to Afognak had disastrous results, as noted on page 3.

Hunters reminded of rabbit season dates

Local hunters are reminded that rabbit season closed March 31 and that rabbits cannot be taken legally until September 1.

Beach Road House Robbed

The Beach Road residence of Amanda Price was robbed between Wednesday afternoon and 1 30 am the next morning while the owner was away. Police report a break in through a glass door, with three bank books 330 in cash an onyx ring and clothing taken. A serviceman suspect is in custody as the investigation continues.

Children To Hunt Eggs In Kodiak Easter Event

The Kodiak Business and Professional Women's club sponsors the first Easter egg hunt in Kodiak history for preschool and grade school children tomorrow between 1 and 2 pm in the school yard. To conserve food, real eggs are replaced with 16 pounds of miniature candy eggs in cellophane bags, some containing small prizes, and a large Easter basket with tea.

Katmai Clamming and Fishing Opened Under Park Limits

A letter to Charles Skinner from the National Park Service director states clamming on Katmai beaches and commercial fishing offshore are permitted this season within the mean high tide limit. The park has no jurisdiction beyond that line. building restrictions above high water remain, and Fish and Wildlife Service will police streams. The park had blocked a dam cannery previously, and unions plus the Chamber of Commerce pushed to lift the previous ruling.

Strike Settlement Efforts Continue in Alaska Cannery Tie Up

Union leader and U. S. conciliator flew to Ketchikan to settle the longshore strike while the Alaska Cannery Workers strike set for midnight remains unresolved. Workers demand a 30 percent wage rise as negotiations fail. A conciliator meeting with union and employer reps yielded no progress. The shipping halt threatens Territory food supplies as the Sakina and Cordova face pickets and the April 23 sailing from Seattle to Kodiak is affected.

Juneau Faces Air Lift as Local Shortages Grow

Juneau endures food shortages as butter, eggs, meat, and produce dwindle with strikes. Emergency air transport between Alaska and Seattle is authorized to supply essential goods, with Alaska air carriers allowed to fly between Seattle and Alaska points until June 1.

Alaska Vets Act Tax Headed For Court Test

The Alaska sales tax under the Veteran's Act nears court clarification as merchants in the Territory study it. Some collect it, others do not, while Senator Norman Walker refuses to pay when charged on a restaurant meal. The bill sets a one percent tax on gross revenue from retail sales or services, with a $100 quarterly threshold, and a half percent wholesale tax on wholesale sales and certain exports. Life insurance and tax exempt bonds are exempt. Tax forms will be issued, with quarterly remittance starting after July.
