Governor Egan warns against Japanese king crab fleet

In a reply to the Kodiak Mirror Governor William A. Egan says a Japanese king crab fleet plans to fish south of the Alaska Peninsula. He urges the U.S. State Department to block king crab fishing in the Gulf of Alaska and seeks an early declaration that king crabs are on the Continental Shelf.

Junior Prom Set For April 27th

The Junior Class plans the annual Junior-Senior Prom for Saturday evening April 27 from nine to one. The theme is a deep dark secret. The midnight crown­ing of the king and queen will feature a senior boy and a senior girl. Kodiak High School graduates may attend with advance passes from the principal’s office.

California Packers executive arrives in Kodiak for two weeks

Charles Campbell of CAL-PAK, head of the largest canning company, California Packers, which includes Alaska Packers as a subsidiary, arrived in Kodiak on Thursday to stay about two weeks and oversee operations.

No Rain Brings Water Crisis to City Cannery Operations

The city maintains emergency pumping from Beaver Lake as drought worsens. Only .004 inches of rain fell last Friday with no substantial rainfall forecast. Pillar Creek flow is minimal, barely crossing water, and LeRoy Cooper reports the creek no longer reaches the bay, vanishing before the mouth.

Fire destroys Baptist Mission garage. cause undetermined

A fire early Monday completely leveled the Baptist Mission garage, shop and recreation center, with an estimated loss of $35,000. Four vehicles including a new 1 ton Dodge, a 1961 Chevrolet Corvair, a Ford tractor, and a 1954 Dodge bus were destroyed along with tools and equipment. Mission Superintendent Bill Stone praised the Kodiak Volunteer Fire Department for their quick response, noting heat could have endangered Mc Whinney Cottage across the street.

Base Announces Stringent Fire Prevention Rules

Kodiak Naval Station enforces strict fire prevention as drought tightens. Smokey the Bear and Captain Roy P. Gee announce measures including no outdoor camping, no open fires, no hiking on Old Woman Mountain, and extreme care in smoking. Rules apply while danger persists.

Construction of State Vocational School Under Way By 64

Sen. Al Owen says actual construction of the Ko diak Aleutians Vocational School should begin by spring 1964. Location to be chosen by the state board of education after reviewing the buildings division report on site utilities and transportation access. The bond funds cover construction of the school proper only. Housing funds may come from federal sources. The school will be open to all citizens regardless of race. Owen credits teamwork with Rep. Gil Jarvela in passing enabling legislation.

Dugwyler Resigns Guard Post in Alaska Unit

Ken Dugwyler, unit administrator of the Kodiak unit of the Alaska National Guard, announced his resignation effective April 26. He plans a weeklong visit to Hoquiam Washington with his parents, and will return immediately after the trip. His brother Don also resides in the area.

Nekeferoff Dies Veteran From World War I at 65

Bill Nekeferoff 65 died Sunday April 14 at his Tagura Road home. Born Kodiak April 24 1897 he was a World War I veteran. Funeral services were held at Kodiak Mortuary at 10 a.m. Friday followed by burial at the Russian Cemetery. Sole survivor is his brother George Nekeferoff.
