Military Board Visits Governor Calls for Postwar Planning

A joint Presidential Board of Army and Navy officers surveyed local military facilities this week to assess postwar defense needs. The 27 officers visited Naval Air Base and other installations, with no commitments made. Governor Gruening and Lt Gen Emmons received the Legion of Merit in ceremonies aboard NAS NOB, Red Admiral Daubin hosted and Brig Gen Bathurst also awarded.

Red Cross Drive Starts Monday in Kodiak

The annual Red Cross Drive begins Monday with local businesses and homes asked to contribute. Mrs. Louise Coon chairs the fundraising campaign and a volunteer canvass will be conducted. L. K. Wodlinger, head of the local Red Cross Chapter, sets Kodiak’s goal at 3500 dollars.

Election of Chamber officers and two executive seats

Election of officers and two executive committee members will be held on May 23. Nominations for officers will be made at the May 9 meeting.

Warning Issued For Fire Siren Violations

Police chief George Magnusen issued warnings this week for siren violations as drivers fail to pull over for fire engines. A coupe cut between two responding trucks and a navy vehicle followed the trucks blocking main street, hindering fire crews.

Chamber of Commerce president Lee Bettinger reported on a Juneau trip, noting George Parks of the land office said the site is not officially available. The Women’s Society of the Community Baptist church installed new officers for the coming year at Thursday’s meeting in the church social room. New Council Still To Meet

Absence of a quorum prevented the new council from meeting Monday evening while the old council finished its year. G W Bubendorf urged action and governor appropriations for delinquent children. The city paid its school debt with 4382.25 and approved 1200 for the public health nurse. Olaf Olsen circulated a 78 signature petition to fill the clerk treasurer post with an ex service man or woman. Outgoing Mayor O A Torgerson thanked the council and welcomed the new officers.

Winners Named in Local American Legion Essay Contest

winners are Katherine Frost earning $5 first, Ben Malutin $3 second, and Billy Anderson $2 third. L J Norman commander of Post 17 presented prizes. Essays will be judged with others in Alaska by G W Bubendorf William H Olsen and William H Lamme.
