KEA president Gibbons announces KEA’s finances for the past three years in MIRROR show a $9000 deficit in the last half of 1948. He says service cannot be rendered at current rates and proposes a 14 cent per kilowatt hour raise. A special board meeting is set for Tuesday at 7:80 PM at the community center. members urged to attend.
Kodiak will have one of two new Elks lodges established in the Alaska West district soon, per Roy Southworth secretary of the Anchorage lodge. An Anchorage Times article notes Kodiak and Seward will bring total Alaska West chapters to five. Local Bills' club is currently an affiliate of Anchorage. Petitions to organize were presented by Eugene C. Smith district deputy exalted ruler and forwarded to grand lodge headquarters. final approval is expected shortly.
His Excellency Most Rev Francis D Gleeson S J spent Tuesday to Thursday in Kodiak on a two months tour of northern and western missions and will return to Juneau in June. Father Louis B Fink S J noted this was his second Kodiak visit. he confirmed 40 persons during the stay, the first visit having been in July 1947.
An unidentified man falls into water on April 1 in Kodiak but no body is found as GeorgeMagnuen reports a water body. Alice Civen and Mabel Fenner prompted Frank Beals to call the scene, all watching the dash to the float amid widespread April Fool's Day pranks. Kodiak's first self service grocery will open Monday morning as City Market expands into the former Kodiak Mercantile Co space. The enlarged store, owned by Mr and Mrs Glen Banks, connects the buildings with a removed wall section and new shelves to better display stock.
Alaska Steamship Company will begin experiments with large steel shipping containers to reduce losses from damage and pilferage. Twelve weather tight containers, each with a capacity of 275 cubic feet, are on order from Dravo Corporation and will be placed in service once available to protect merchandise most affected.
A dinner will be held Friday night at the Montmartre Inn to honor G. Edgar Vaughn the British consul at Seattle who will be in town next week The Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the affair tickets available from Gene Mailar or Lilian Morris
Major George E. McConnell, post commander at Fort Greely, urges Kodiak residents to join Army Day on April 6. He says the day is for the army to explain itself and for the community to show support by displaying flags, with limited Fort Greely activities and an open house. An exhibit of small arms and equipment will be shown in Kraft's Men's Store window.
Admiral Montgomery commander Alaska Sea Frontier at Kodiak since August 1947 will be relieved of duties in May. Rear Admiral Frank D. Wagner, commander of Fleet At West Coast, will relieve Montgomery as commander of Naval Operating Base in Bermuda.
The House Public Lands Committee named six members to press the House Interior Committee for swift action on Alaska and Hawaii statehood bills stalled for weeks by the Rules Committee. Rep Crawford Mehgan criticized the delay, urging firm action on offshore statehood effort. Meanwhile Alaska legislators grilled Governor Ernest Gruening's confirmation, with Rep Marcus Jensen charging power seeking and Rep Frank Angerman opposing due to alleged improper influence. Senator Malone commented on presidential control of Congress’ program as Gruening allies prepared to testify in Washington.
Karl Brunstad, Third Division representative of the Territorial Fisheren Board, returned from Juneau after attending the first board meeting. Named to a two year term by Governor Gruening, Brunstad will participate in an April 25 session in Juneau to name a director as applications are sought. He favors stocking Kodiak island lakts with salmon and emphasized Alaskan hiring if equally qualified candidates exist.
Charles Madsen’s new boat Bear, with Roy and Mrs Roy Madsen aboard, was due to reach the Standard Oil float at 10 30 last night after departing from S cattle.
The VFW and its Auxiliary hold a joint installation Tuesday at 8 pm at the Montmartre Inn with the public invited. Four new members were initiated on Thursday: W. Wilson, John Drewes, W. G Woodward, and J Mejon.
