KEA Plans Rate Increase to Meet Deficit

KEA president Gibbons announces KEA’s finances for the past three years in MIRROR show a $9000 deficit in the last half of 1948. He says service cannot be rendered at current rates and proposes a 14 cent per kilowatt hour raise. A special board meeting is set for Tuesday at 7:80 PM at the community center. members urged to attend.

Kodiak May Get Elks Lodge

Kodiak will have one of two new Elks lodges established in the Alaska West district soon, per Roy Southworth secretary of the Anchorage lodge. An Anchorage Times article notes Kodiak and Seward will bring total Alaska West chapters to five. Local Bills' club is currently an affiliate of Anchorage. Petitions to organize were presented by Eugene C. Smith district deputy exalted ruler and forwarded to grand lodge headquarters. final approval is expected shortly.

Bishop Gleeson Visits Kodiak During North Tour

His Excellency Most Rev Francis D Gleeson S J spent Tuesday to Thursday in Kodiak on a two months tour of northern and western missions and will return to Juneau in June. Father Louis B Fink S J noted this was his second Kodiak visit. he confirmed 40 persons during the stay, the first visit having been in July 1947.

Alaska Steam To Fight Pilferage With New Shipping Containers

Alaska Steamship Company will begin experiments with large steel shipping containers to reduce losses from damage and pilferage. Twelve weather tight containers, each with a capacity of 275 cubic feet, are on order from Dravo Corporation and will be placed in service once available to protect merchandise most affected.

Army Day Observance Called by Fort Greely Commander

Major George E. McConnell, post commander at Fort Greely, urges Kodiak residents to join Army Day on April 6. He says the day is for the army to explain itself and for the community to show support by displaying flags, with limited Fort Greely activities and an open house. Brunstad Attends First Territorial Fisheries Board Meeting

Karl Brunstad, Third Division representative of the Territorial Fisheren Board, returned from Juneau after attending the first board meeting. Named to a two year term by Governor Gruening, Brunstad will participate in an April 25 session in Juneau to name a director as applications are sought. He favors stocking Kodiak island lakts with salmon and emphasized Alaskan hiring if equally qualified candidates exist.
