In the XLVI Congress May 7 session the Senate tabled the election interference measure, while considering Kellogg's contested seat. Edm unds and Spofford memorials dominated debate on Louisiana matters, with amendments rejected and testimony authorized. Chalmers pressed Fort Pillow accusations amid limited inquiry, and Blaine proposed penalties for concealed weapons at elections.
In a congressional session testimony by Tiefenaior Lee clarified Fort Pillow garrison figures and casualty estimates. He attributed protection to the flag of truce and defended his dead commander with a tribute to soldierly honor. Debate touched on treatment of surrendered troops and policy implications. The house then tabled the topic as it moved on to the eight hour law and the Coinage bill.
In New York on April 7 the Longshoremen strike appears partly successful as the Pacific Mail Steamship agent resumes former wages to secure a steamer departure. Coasting firms may follow, and the French line also rehired workers at old rates of 45 cents per oar for night shifts and 80 cents by day.
In Wilkesbarre on May 7 a massive gas explosion rocked the Stanton shaft, leaving several miners badly hurt as a fierce blaze broke out. The mine was flooded to quench the fire. Also in Harrisburg the Democratic State Central Committee fixed July 16 for the state convention.
In Terre Haute Indiana on May 5 mayoral race totals were Hagen 2022 Democrat Wildey 1942 Greenbacker Hook 920 Republican with Democrats winning Treasurer Marshal Clerk and five council seats while Greenbackers took one council seat and Republicans the assessor. In St Louis the National Women's Suffrage Association met on May 7 with leading veteran suffrage workers in attendance.
On April 14 off the River Loa the Chilean corvette Magallanee fought Peru’s Union and Pilcomayo for two hours. The Chilean ship with six guns retreated after light damage, while Peru claimed their squadron performed well. Gen. Ed F Noyes plans to return to participate in the next campaign.
About 1,000 workers walk off for wage cuts to two dollars a day and board costs. Strikers seize works but violence not yet reported. Winnipeg solicitor asks Chief Justice Wood to authorize force to end the strike. Cross Lake reports say authorities may pay off workers and hire new hands. troops ordered in readiness, no property damage beyond seized provisions.
Journal de St. Petersburg says no arms prohibition exists just require informing authorities. The Chester Trades Cup at Chester racecourse featured Parole as favorite but Reefer won with Touchet second and Ridatto third. In Parliament a bill to establish volunteer regiments in Ireland passed its second reading with government assent and likely modification.
South Africa dispatch reports Yakoob Klan leaving a cavalry regiment due to fodder shortages. He moved to Gundamak with 120 infantry as escort and is expected to reach the British camp tomorrow morning.
The sheriff announces a public auction of 309.25 acres known as the River farm in the 10th civil district of Knox County, Tennessee. The sale occurs Monday June 2 1579 before the courthouse door for cash to the highest bidder, following prior conveyances and a trust for Andrew Kurel’s note payment.
