Virginia Legislature to elect United States Senator

The Virginia General Assembly met to choose a successor to Senator Withers whose term ends March 4, 1881. In the House Mahone led with 56 votes to Withers 40 and Wickham 2. in the SenateMahone 23 Withers 13 Wickham 8 and Daniel 0. The joint vote totals 188 with Mahone at 79, Withers 53, Wickham 5, Daniel 0. A joint session tomorrow will formalize Mahone as senator. Separately 100 colored emigrants from Goldsboro NC arrived en route to Washington, heading to Indiana, about their climate and conditions unknown.

Maine reflects party split as council posts full results

In Avavusta, December 16, the Maine Council issued remaining certificates and promised an official list tomorrow. Officials report the House with 61 Republicans, 78 Fusionists, and 12 vacancies. the Senate with 20 Fusionists and 11 Republicans. On December 17 the council confirms the figures and notes no county officer decisions yet.

State forecloses railroad mortgage in Arkansas chancery case

Chancellor Carroll in Pulaski County Chancery Court rules the State wins foreclosure against the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad Company et al. The mortgage of 1861 for 100000 dollars secures current debt and interest exceeding 202000 dollars and the property may be sold if paid by a set day, with an appeal likely.
