Weekly Weather and Crop Report notes continued rain harming tobacco, pastures and corn. Grains and legumes struggle on wet land while farmers plan autumn seeding and weed control. DDT use advised for storage, and county notes from Grainger Hawkins Johnson Sullivan detail tobacco damage and late plantings.
The Agricultural Market Service notes a downturn in hog and broiler prices with declines of 50 cents to 1.5 dollars per hundred pounds in southern markets and Chicago. Southern broilers fell about a half to one cent or more per pound, reaching yearly lows. Grass-fed steers and heifers closed near 50 cents lower than the prior week at upper South terminals, though Florida held steady with some gains up to 25 cents or more.
T. R. Jones of Piney Flats was reelected chairman of the Sullivan County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee, with H. W. Copenhaver named vice chairman and M. J. Morsal as regular member. Other delegates include NM Anderson of Piney Flats and W. C. Graham of Bristol. The group sets policy, acreage allotments, and ACP funding for the Soil Bank program.
Sullivan County Agent McClain notes October as optimal for chemical treatment of tobacco plant beds. New and existing treatments include methyl bromide gas weed control, calcium cyanamid granular, allyl alcohol and sodium methyldithiocarbamate drenches, sold as Weed Seed Eller and Weedrenuh. Beds should be prepared to 4–6 inch depth with protective borders, then chemical applications per manufacturer directions. Safety label instructions must be followed. Farmers in County prepare for 1943 winter wheat payments totaling about 6130.75 dollars across 234 acres. Agreements set allotments as siding stabilization and concentration programs update. Local agricultural authority reported Saturday the signing window closes soon with payments varying by acreage.
Hundreds of beef calves of every breed will leave Hawkins County pastures for new homes this week. They have been consigned to a feeder calf sale to be held Wednesday at the Rogersville Livestock Market as part of a Tennplace series.
