Mrs. Walter Daugherty, 34, of Kingsport route No 6, fell from an apple tree and injured her hip. She was treated at Holston Valley Community Hospital. Another fall victim, Mrs. Maggie Hicks, 73, of Kingsport route No 1, fractured a shoulder after tripping over a stick or root while walking in her yard Monday.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill predicted the war would last at least through 1942 and warned Hitler could strike Egypt, Spain, Africa and England while defensive in the east. He noted Germany’s air shortage but said Britain had seized the initiative in the air, with Soviet counterattacks around Leningrad advancing and Axis forces making limited gains on the eastern front.
The Rev. L. B. Cobb of Shreveport has accepted the pastorate at First Baptist Church in Kingsport. He will arrive Oct 14 and begin duties the next day, with Lawrence Trivette remaining as associate pastor. Cobb previously led Broadmore Baptist in Shreveport and served seven years in a Memphis church.

Trapeze artist Bubbles Ricardo, understudy to death, will swing no more after a fall at the Madison County Fair left her with a fractured pelvis and a right wrist plus amputation of the left arm. Doctors say she will live. She had waited in a New York booking office for accidents to happen and had just been called to substitute when the accident occurred.
The National Safety Council reported 3,910 U S traffic deaths in August, an 21 percent rise from last year, with an eight month total of 24,030 deaths up 18 percent from 1940. The figures precede a nationwide safety drive urged by President Roosevelt and linked to defense program needs. Cities with populations over 10,000 saw a 30 percent jump in deaths in July, though first-half increases were smaller.
Japanese forces landed a small parachute detachment at Chuchow near Changsha but were killed or driven off, Chinese officials say. Chinese sources claim Changsha remains under Chinese control as Taishan, near Kywangtung, is recaptured and three towns northwest of It drive Japanese troops toward the coast. A Japanese dispatch reports a strategic withdrawal after achieving aims of seizing or burning Chinese war materials.
Sheriff Tim Phalen cited Mrs. Jennie Bruner, 22, in the death of her husband Sam Bruner, 26, on a Mason City area farm. She said a gun was in play and she grabbed it, then fired. The 45 caliber revolver was the murder weapon. The couple had been married seven months.
Indianapolis attorney general Francis Biddle warned that anti alien baiting has not vanished in the United States despite police efforts as the defense program advances. He cited few states enacting laws against foreigners and warned that discrimination persists, noting a recent attack on Jews. He credited governors for reducing hysteria and vigilante groups, and said registration and espionage controls remain with the federal government.
Washington reports indicate Hull urges scrapping the neutrality act while Willkie backs repeal or revision. President Roosevelt plans talks today to decide between limited modification or full repeal, possibly arming merchant ships and allowing vessels in belligerent zones. Connally also endorses reasserting freedom of the seas amid Hitler’s submarine warfare.
A man was fined $50 in Kingsport city court for seizing coal without a city license. It was the largest fine handed down in today’s session. A separate fine was issued on a public drunkenness charge and forfeitures were declared on several cash bonds for overtime parking and a traffic signal violation.
RAF bombers set many large fires in Stettin during overnight raids and targeted docks and railways. Subsidiary attacks hit Cherbourg and Le Havre. Eight RAF bombers and two fighters were reported missing. British fighters claimed one hostile fighter shot down and another damaged. The Stettin raid was the war’s 11th long range strike aiding Russia. British raids also hit Cagliari and Catania with some damage acknowledged and Italian claims of downed British craft.

Berlin notes a decree extends German citizenship to those who acquired Belgian nationality per the Versailles treaty. In Kharkov, Russian trains suffer damage from German bombers. Hull and Roosevelt discuss the international situation and neutrality law revision. A separate report says a stabbing in Harlan leads to a bail warrant for the suspect. Rome claims an eastbound British convoy was diverted. Alabama polio cases reach 728 with September nearing end.
In New Mexico heavy tropical rains transformed the Gila and Hondo rivers into torrents. The Gila valley suffered the most, with damage estimated at about 8 million dollars. Nineteen lives reportedly lost in ten days and thousands of acres of farmland washed away or buried under debris.
British admiralty reports an aerial torpedo struck the battleship Nelson during a central Mediterranean convoy run. The attack damaged the vessel slightly yet caused no crew casualties. Italian claims of sunk ships and missing planes are disputed by the British account.
Berlin announced 24 Czechs were executed for plotting to throw off German rule in Bohemia Moravia. Among the slain were former army leaders General Joseph Bily Division General Hugo Volla and Brigadier General Frantisek Horacek. The men were described as leading figures in the opposition seeking an independent Czech state. The executions followed Heydrich declaring civil emergency in six districts.
