Governor Milliken of Maine told the Fifteenth International Congress Against Alcoholism that prohibition saved about two billion dollars in the past year. He said it boosted business, cut crime, and let the nation channel drink money into legitimate trade while improving labor efficiency and shaping a healthier next generation.
Governor Cox of Ohio charged Lincoln newspapers with being bought up to hide campaign facts. He claimed a deliberate corrupt purpose to keep facts from the people and reiterated his positions on prohibition and the Irish question. He spoke at the Bryan home and criticized the Republican national committee for omitting the League covenant issue.
Washington report notes Louisiana’s population at 1 797 710, up 8.5 percent. Illinois totals 6 485 098, up 15 percent, per census bureau figures released today.
Police placards warned of burning County Clare towns if Captain Lenbrum, who vanished in Kilkee, was not returned unharmed within 24 hours. Ennis, Dublin, Sept. 28.
The Hammond Post No. 3 American Legion schedules a meeting in the city court room at 8 o clock tomorrow night to finish plans for a local minstrel show. Jake Herren will direct the production and oversee arrangements. The date and cast will be decided, with proceeds benefiting the local post.
Nearly one thousand people attended the Blountville Presbyterian Church centennial on Sunday. Rev. Dr. J W Bachman of Chattanooga delivered the morning sermon, followed by a basket dinner on the church lawn. Dr. C C Carson of Bristol gave the afternoon address, with several former members speaking. The church, founded in 1820 by Judge Samuel Rhea, is among the oldest in the region, with original membership of fifteen.
George W Simmons of Simmons Hardware Company in St. Louis spoke at Central High School about his Red Cross mission in Bolshevist Russia. He recounted dangers in Siberia and the famine stricken cities, the Bolshevist administration, leaders Lenine and Trotsky, and German influence. He praised Kingsport Americanism and warned of future strikes while noting U S propaganda funds. Dr John H Clifford introduced him.
Kingsport city schools welcomed the teaching staff from thirteen states at a Central High School gathering. Supt. Crouch praised board members for investing in quality education and noted plans for a future industry tour and an automobile ride to view local facilities.
Cincinnati September 26 Rev Aaron S Watkins Prohibition candidate for president denied reports of offers to withdraw if either Gov Cox or Sen Harding would enforce the Volstead act. He declared he would run for president regardless of major party stand.
P. S. Wilcox of Tennessee Eastman and J. F. White of Union Dye and Chemical Works were elected to the First National Bank board. The nine-director bank operates four years with deposits of 750000 dollars.
The National Commission here changed the World Series schedule. The first games will be in Brooklyn October 5 6 and 7 with four games to follow in the American League city if needed to decide the series. President Dunn of Cleveland requested the change due to park preparations.
Clyde Roller was shot three times in the left thigh at the Elks' Home in Bristol Virginia, by S. W. Scruggs a railroad mail clerk. Reports conflict on intoxication threats and the motive. Roller sought a doctor then returned home. no arrests reported.
Hon. Anneth D. McKellar, U.S. senator from Tennessee, will deliver an address at Central High School auditorium at 8:30 p.m. tonight. He arrives from Johnson City and has spoken earlier in Blountville and Bristol, focusing on the League of Nations and national issues with support for Wilson and a call to consider suffrage, with reserved seating for women and no admission fee.
Dublin reports troops found ammunition and seditious documents in the home of Mrs. Thomas MacCurtain widow of Cork’s late Lord Mayor during a search. The discovery is formally announced as part of ongoing security actions.

Kingsport Rod and Gun Club announces its first official shooting to be held at three o clock tomorrow afternoon on the range near Lovedale school. Equipment and traps are in place after recent completion. Preliminary shooting occurred yesterday with twenty seven members showing strong interest as weekly shoots are planned.
Cleveland witnessed a 20 000 ex service men parade drawing about 300 000 observers and 50 000 out-of-town visitors marking the first day of the American Legion’s second annual convention. Commander Franklin D Olier opened the session as committees prepared rules and credentials for future business.

London reporting Terence MacSwiney is described as somewhat refreshed by sleep but very weak on the 47th day of his hunger strike. Sinn Fein bulletin notes the hunger strike continues with little change in his condition.
Archbishop Mannix met Lord Mayor Terence MacSwiney in Cork after leaving prison. Mannix told reporters MacSwiney is a miracle in his strength. A bulletin from the Irish Self-Determination League said MacSwiney remains exhausted but conscious.
The United States has received a treaty pledging Lithuania to allow Bolshevist troops to use its territory as the base for an attack on Poland. The pact with Russia marks a strong alliance with direct relevance to the looming Poland Lithuania conflict.
