In SEQPOLDVILLE Congo an alleged assassination attempt on Premier Moise Tshombe during a King Baudouin Stadium football match between Congo and Liberia was foiled by fans. Police held two Congolese men who drew revolvers as Tshombe’s cry ended.
Eugene Shelton Gillenwater 45 of Fort Blackmore was killed when his private auto left the Fort Blackmore Highway struck a culvert and spun. A bystander said he raised his head before dying from a neck wound. Survivors include his widow, three daughters, a son, parents, sisters and brothers. Funeral arrangements by Gate City Funeral Home.
Richard Thornton, a native of Florida and North Carolina born, has assumed duties as executive director of the Kingsport Chapter of the American Red Cross. He replaces Gene Nunler who moved to a national Red Cross post in Atlanta. Thornton comes to Kingsport from Miami, Florida, where he served as a national representative.

Sheriff T A Buchanan said Lemay may have fled with his wife Lise after paying a $35,000 bribe and altering money at a Canadian bank. Arrests were expected for aiding the escape as police track an outside man and the case expands to jail guards and a bondsman connected to Lise's deportation appeal.
