Rioting broke out in Farrell to day as steel strikers clashed with workers attempting to report at the South Carnegie mills. Two killed eleven injured as authorities struggle to control the scene with 300 deputies deployed.
The first day of a broad steel industry strike saw armed guards at mills and scattered unrest. Labor leaders claim about 284,000 strikers with other estimates varying, while some Bethlehem Steel workers seek talks rather than a walkout as the conflict looms into a long fight.
Birmingham, Alabama reports all steel mills in the Alabama steel districts operating at full time today, unaffected by the strike.
In Cleveland on September 23, sixteen of twenty mills in the district were shut down with three seriously crippled and one operating at full capacity. Union leaders say twenty thousand new members are rapidly enrolling in the strike.
Chicago observes a strike holiday with 15000 workers idle. Movie theaters and ice cream parlors report brisk business while the Calumet district remains unchanged. Hubbard company proposed a conference with the strikers, but the offer was rejected.
The Lackawanna Steel Plant shut down at noon after more workers joined the strike. The Donner Steel Co prepared to close tonight or tomorrow. Rioting erupted again injuring Michael Murphy master mechanic of the Lackawanna mills. Two persons were arrested.
In Pittsburg district a crowd of workmen gathered again at mill gates after a night of scattered clashes with police and bloodshed. Two additional troops of State Constabulary head to the steel region by special train to be distributed through steel towns.
United States Steel Corp headquarters reported no comment from Elbert H. Gary on the steel and iron strike. Gary, chairman of the board, said he had nothing to say for publication about the strike or the company’s plans. He did receive many messages of felicitation for his stand against the closed shop, though he did not know who sent them. One message came from J Pierpont Morgan, now in London.
The M. E. Church changes worship place from Strand Theatre to the Gaiety announced by pastor Rev. S. G. Ketron. Services will be held Sundays starting Sept 28 until the church building is completed.
Senator Penrose asserts in the Senate that President Wilson and his party returned from the Paris peace conference with gifts from crowned heads worth more than a million dollars Jewelry reportedly included, with customs valuation cited as evidence. Senator Ashurst defends the principle against accepting foreign gifts.
Bloomingdale resident Charlie Clark reports a two headed calf born Sunday September 14 on his Bloomingdale area farm near the school. The calf has two mouths and two sets of eyes, with ears only on either side. Clark plans to sell it to a circus if it survives, valued at about $500.
Kingsport new city manager Herbert Kidd announced an open office policy promising direct access for citizens to praise blame or suggest improvements. The report also covers local construction plans the Blountville amalgamated fair and trials including Jasper Trimble in the Shoe murder case and other court actions in Kingsport and Blountville.
Senator Reed of Missouri delivers a four hour critique of the League of Nations, drawing fierce gallery demonstrations. The crowd cheers and hisses erupt as Reed denounces the covenant and attacks President Wilson, with leaders Lodge and Hitchcock urged to restore order.
A Moscow wireless dispatch says a bomb in a guard room killed six and wounded thirteen soldiers but Admiral Kolchak escaped unharmed. The Omsk government head was targeted in the incident reported from London.
The Christian Church ended revival services with 24 new members admitted, 12 by profession of faith. Rev. A A Ferguson preached sermons on life events of Christ and the Disciples. Baptisms occurred in the creek near the Gibsontown mill dam, and Ferguson plans a next meeting in Princeton West Virginia.
In Chicago the company says 70 to 90 percent of workers stayed loyal while 67 500 obeyed the strike call. Youngstown reports 30 000 in the district and 55 000 in the entire area including Sharon and New Castle. Company figures are much lower.
Three men confessed today to stealing 234000 in payroll cash from Standard Oil Company of Indiana. Police recovered 93000 and located further loot after a saloon suspect was found with 20000 on him. The trio implicated each other as officers pursued the remaining funds.
A W Tillinghast and Maurice McCarthy arrived to supervise grass sowing at Kingsport Golf Course. Tillinghast, headed to Pasadena, stays until tomorrow. McCarthy remains likely through December. McCarthy, a renowned pro, has spent summers teaching at Loon Lake. J W Dobyns has supervised since July after cow peas sowing.
Sullivan County Baptists organize for a 75 million campaign with a $10000 county quota. Kingsport organizers led by T R Bandy and Rev R E Corum head three teams to raise Sullivan City shares. Dr J H Clifford chairs the Booster Committee with W H Farthing and George W Horne named as local organizers.
Tennessee State Senator J Parks Worley III and his wife are seriously ill with influenza at their Bluff City home. Worley fell ill Saturday with a high fever after visiting a farm. a physician classifies the illness as Spanish influenza.
Kingsport movie fans will see a new $5,000 pipe organ installed at the Strand Theatre to accompany films. The instrument, described as the best in the area, includes pipes and a mechanical playing attachment and should be ready within the week.
