Weather forecast indicates fair skies tonight with stable temperatures in Tennessee and North Carolina. Stucky notes a warmer Thursday, slight warming in the western portion tonight, while North Carolina expects continued clear conditions into Thursday.
An agreement grants the newly formed Mead Employes Association the right to act as sole bargaining agent for about 400 Mead Corporation workers. Mead plans to confer with firm leadership in Chillicothe on terms pending a contract, including wage increases and paid vacations.
In Shelbyville Kentucky three Garr brothers Jack Rey and Dr E S Garr plan to seek freedom on bond as they face self defense claims in the Denhardt Taylor case They are charged with slaying Brigadier General Henry H Denhardt whose death sparked a chain of events tied to the Garr sisters Verna Garr Taylor A prosecutor indicated the defendants might be denied bond until arraignment set for Friday Funeral plans were announced for Denhardt with private services at his sister’s home and public viewing at Denhardt Hall prior to burial in Bowling Green

William Green, AFL president, urged closer cooperation between the American Federation of Labor and the American Legion before 1,939 delegates at the Legion’s 19th annual convention in New York. Brig. Gen. Frank Hines called for tolerance of new ideas as the crowd heard warnings about communism and nazism and the need to preserve democracy. A vast parade drew up Fifth Avenue with 200,000 Legionnaires and a multi-million strong public audience, as 160 aircraft flew overhead and debris from the march was cleared after a long, celebratory day.
Hawkins County schools remain closed as the case over whether the old board could hire teachers for the 1937 38 term heads to the Tennessee Supreme Court on September 29. Superintendent E A Cope says opening plans depend on the court ruling and aims for a full term by October 11 if credits stay valid. About 6000 Hawkins County students are idle awaiting the decision on legality of past teacher elections and funding.
F F Estes of Washington traffic manager for the National Coal Association told about 300 members of the Ohio Valley Transportation advisory board at a quarterly Louisville meeting that coal and coke prices must be increased.
On trial again in Texas Brooks, alias Rev J B Jones, seeks conviction for the murder of Deputy Arch Redmond after his 1940s acquittal in the Deputy Bob Batley case. Brooks, the St Charles Va merchant, was captured last spring while attempting to conceal identity with a beard and false name.
In Wish Virginia police and FBI experts said fingerprints from the payroll truck robbery near Norton do not match three Gate City men held on the theft. Seven suspects including the Creek family and Bellamy Falin and Babb are being questioned as the case unfolds with no confession reported. The robbery occurred on a remote mountain road near Norton when the payroll truck was forced off the road and the crew removed.
The Virginia Court of Appeals denied the Scott County school board mandamus to force the Board of Supervisors to provide a maximum levy for school operation. The case questions whether supervisors may delete budget items or if school officials control the funding needed for an eight month term. Local officials await the full decision after today’s briefings and differ on who sets county education expenditures.
Oscar Bartolini a Quincy handyman, 21, sat calm behindDedham jail bars awaiting the mandatory death sentence after being found guilty of first degree murder in the dismemberment slaying of Mrs Grayce Asquith of Weymouth. Foreman Frederick Phelps read the verdict just after midnight, six hours and forty seven minutes after jurors began deliberations. District Attorney Edmund R Dewing had argued Bartolini killed for jealousy and infatuation, as the case closed with the defendant showing no visible emotion.

Japan apologizes for wounding the British ambassador to China in an aerial attack near Shanghai. President Roosevelt approves final plans for the voluntary unemployment census, to be completed before December. Los Angeles to host the American Legion 1898 convention.
Tennessee voters face a light turnout forecast for the liquor referendum with an estimated 140000 to 200000 ballots. Secretary of State A B Broadbent notes the result is advisory and will not bind the legislature, while dry advocates push for a strong showing to demonstrate public will. Governor Breuning pledges an extra session if repeal wins. Memphis polls hint at a lighter local vote, and Crump’s stance may tilt Memphis turnout.
Washington reports Chairman Robert E Webb of the Kentucky railroad commission questioned three proposed tobacco freight hikes. He argued some carriers are financially sound while weaker lines face high interest charges. He said restructuring debt and a four cent four hundredweight cap could save over 21 million annually, far more than the proposed schedule’s 349 thousand. He urged voluntary reorganization of overburdened firms or ICC action to enforce economic reform.
