Thousands gather to hear and see the greatest ring war as Bettire and Tunney, kept from public sight, exchange momentum with Bettire evening the score before shifting in favor of either fighter. Alan J. Gould reports that Tunney remains the favored pick among leading sports writers.
In Chicago a 39 minute heavyweight title bout at Soldier Field between Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey captured the world’s gaze. About 150,000 fans paid over $2.5 million as radio and cable networks linked cities worldwide. Tunney stood to earn $1,000,000 with Dempsey adding about $450,000 as the highest drawing card in boxing history.
Senator Reed of Missouri plans to renew the fight in December for adopting a resolution to clarify the legal status of the special campaign funds committee he chairs. Contempt proceedings against Sam Insull are pressed as part of the broader effort. The leadership change in New York’s Legion Department is noted as part of the national context.
Edward S. Spafford of New York was unanimously elected as national commander of the American Legion in Paris. The vote was held in five minutes with no opposition, a first in the organization. John Dickerson aged about 45 was found dead under a shade tree at his brother in law T N Cleek's Holston Springs home near Gate City Virginia about four yesterday. An autopsy by Dr C Barker found death from drinking carbolic acid. Dickerson had been in Gate City yesterday morning and had his will drawn by Will H Nickels, then bought two ounces of carbolic acid. He was a Scott County farmer. survived by a daughter about 18 employed in Norton. Funeral arrangements pending for this afternoon.
Paul Jones 23, famed for a $1,500 bank holdup at First National Bank, awaits Sullivan County Circuit Court in Blountville with Dodson and Ferguson to defend. Prosecutors aided by Worley and McAmis, Jones pleads possibly temporary insanity. Family in Fall Branch stunned as Jones, wounded, recalls remorse while jailed at Kingsport Blountville cell.
Chicago forecast calls for partly cloudy to cloudy skies with no rain for tonight's Tunney Dempsey heavyweight title bout. Temperatures expected between 54 and 55 degrees after a morning reading of 53. Gentle winds noted as the event nears.

Roy A. Young, longtime banker and former Minneapolis Fed leader, is named to head the Federal Reserve System. Appointed by President Coolidge as a Fed board member, he will become governor of the board upon qualification, replacing D R Crissinger who resigned. Senate confirmation pending.
A naval air station report says the dirigible Los Angeles was over Annapolis Md this forenoon after departing Lakehurst N J yesterday. The airship cruised over North Carolina and Virginia last night and is to moor at Old Plantation Flats Va to the mast of the tender Patoka later today.
Sept 22 Hankow China martial law enforced after a gang rescued a uniformed prisoner believed to be a communist leader near the British concession. The escape followed a barrage on the escort and street gunfire. Casualties reported among passersby and guards. several gang members arrested. Japanese soldiers disarmed and detained Chinese troops afterward.
Four men in two huge monoplanes today presumably were proceeding west across the continent. The report notes the aircraft as they fly toward the western regions, with details continued on page ei.

In Columbus Ga on Sept 22 a private detective chief says Rev Willis T Jordan, ill in a Grand Rapids hospital, will face bigamy charges. He acted after Emma Landridge of Washington now in Columbus claimed to have married Jordan in Charlotte in 1925 and said another long distance marriage occurred earlier. A telegram from Windings Gulf WV supported a third marriage claim.
President Coolidge announces Roy A. Young of Minneapolis will be named to the Federal Reserve Board, becoming the new governor of the Minneapolis federal reserve bank. The appointment elevates Young to a key role in national monetary policy.
Paris September 22 Mrs Irene McIntyre Walbridge of Petersboro New Hampshire was chosen national president on the second ballot by a 333 to 251 margin over Mrs Boyce Ficklin Jr of Washington Georgia The south supported Mrs Walbridge on the first ballot and the result was announced officially with the final tally showing the close contest
