AP reporters tally early tolls from the Florida hurricane across the coast. Florida towns report hundreds dead and thousands homeless as roofs ripped away and floodwaters rise. Fort Lauderdale and Moore Haven show heavy losses. Miami, West Palm Beach, and Pensacola face food and water shortages amid martial law and urgent relief appeals.
The West Indian hurricane battered northeastern Florida causing over 1000 deaths and more than 125 million dollars in damage. Mimni, Hollywood, Hialeah, Fort Lauderdale, and Moorhaven suffered heavy losses with 38,000 homeless and 2,000 injured. Public utilities failed, looting reported, mortuary needs rose, and relief trains ferried aid as authorities sought coffins and shelter. The storm crossed Everglades to the Gulf, dissipating off the West Coast with minimal damage there.
Hurricane relief effort intensifies across southern Florida as ten trains carry food, water, medical supplies, and housing facilities toward Lake Okeechobee and Miami regions. Doctors nurses fraternal organizations and private citizens mobilize, with trains departing from Oakeland Avon Park Tampa Sanford Sebring Jacksonville Fort Pierce and West Palm Beach. Washington dispatch notes nationwide Red Cross relief rushing to Florida after a devastating hurricane injuring and displacing thousands. Governor John W. Martin urged aid from Tallahassee prompting Red Cross to mobilize from national headquarters and dispatch supplies and personnel to Miami and other affected areas.
A lengthy casualty list names Lydia Brookshire Hattie Winslow Frank Schwartz Frank Hoskins Benj Watts and many others in Miami and nearby communities. The report notes thirteen unidentified Hollywood victims and two unidentified children with several residents of Fort Lauderdale Dania and Davie among the injured or dead. Continued on page two.
Florida East Coast railroad officials in St Augustine today confirmed Miami death toll at 194 based on reports from conductors in the storm belt. Hollywood deaths estimated at 54, Hialeah around 200, with officials noting no reports yet from other towns as surveys continue.
A Miami area hurricane disaster leaves an estimated 600 to 1,200 dead and $10 million in damage. Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, Redlands, Morehaven, and Clewiston are hit as West Palm Beach reports hundreds injured and dozens of thousand property ruin.
Late bulletins report Post master General New directing Florida postmasters to use postal facilities for relief and messages to relatives, with Miami post office intact but rear addition washed away. Other east coast offices partly underwater. some parcels lost but overall postal damage limited.

In Bristol Tennessee Virginia, both police chiefs and a patrolman were each bound over for 2000 dollars after Stewart Murray, 31, was shot dead during a pursuit. Chief J E Miller of Bristol Va fired at a car suspected to carry whiskey, later found to involve Murray who was shot in the head. Hearings set for Abingdon on Saturday.
President Coolidge urged nationwide aid for the Florida disaster. In a proclamation he asked for contributions to the American Red Cross and promised federal help within executive powers to relieve Miami Hollywood and nearby communities.
Flood waters in northwestern Iowa receded with damage estimated at 5 million dollars. Major losses reported along the Floyd and Big Sioux rivers and tributaries, with railroads hit hard at 2 million. Sioux City and Harwarden cite hundreds of thousands in losses. four deaths confirmed and 21 possible. Reclamation Bureau asked to approve irrigation in Sacramento Valley with power sales repaying in twenty years.
Avon Park Florida reports fifty six bodies in an improvised morgue with nearly two hundred missing as floodwaters from Lake Okeechobee recede. Refuges describe dike breaks, rescues failing, and villagers isolated at Moorehaven and Lake Port with sightings of tragedy and rare heroism amid the disaster.
