Ten years ago on September 19 a regional singing event was planned with about 24 choirs from Upper East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia at Broad Street Methodist Church. About 1 00 a m yesterday an arson attempt to burn Hale's Pharmacy caused roughly 100 in damage. Kerosene five to ten gallons were poured inside with a fuse under the front door to kerosene soaked newspapers. The Kingsport fire department arrived before the blaze gained headway. Patrolmen noted entrances remained secure and no window dust was disturbed. Shelburne Ferguson and B B Stroud held interests in the building while M W Canter owned most fixtures. Fire marshal Ferguson traveled to Chattanooga for further findings. Kingsport police pursued several clues but did not reveal suspects.
Funeral services for Mrs Sally Larkins 80 who died Friday at 2 00 pm are at Mt Carmel Church in Church Hill with burial in Mt Carmel cemetery. A longtime Oak Grove Baptist member she lived in the neighborhood for 60 years and was active in church and social life. Surviving sons Harvey Dante John Joe Noah and Sam Larkins.
Miss Wally Hamlin gave a tap specialty at the Kingsport Kiwanis noon luncheon with Miss Elizabeth Dillard accompanying on piano. Program chairman E Lynn Minter arranged the act. The club elected delegates Kay Boatright Joe Brosch Dr W B Payne and Ed Triebs to the Kiwanis district convention in Nashville in October 2022. District at large will be represented by Stawarosley former governor of the Tennessee Kentucky district.
Emory and Henry defeated Guilford 19 to 0 and Oregon State led Stanford 6 to 0 while Gonzaga beat Dakota Wesleyan 15 to 0 and South Dakota posted 25 to 0. Olympic Club 0—incomplete details prevent full reconciliation.
American League shows New York leading at 108 44 and Philadelphia 89 57 with Detroit at 71 71. Yesterday results include Boston 5 Detroit 0 and New York 6 St. Louis 4. The Kingsport Community Chest appeals for more food and clothing as winter hunger and deprivation loom. Volunteers from local clubs and churches canned 20 bushels of tomatoes and 240 half gallon jars will feed the needy. Chairman Scott Baller warns that without public cooperation thousands may go hungry or bare. Citizens are urged to donate any fruit or vegetables and those with minor farms to contact Mr. Roller.
White Hart Frye and Hart escaped from a prison road gang at Moccasin Gap last Thursday, attacked guard Leonard and Charlie Branson, and fled toward Bristol with Thomas Marshall who was later captured in Abingdon. Marshall returned to Gate City and then the Richmond state pen. Leonard remained in critical condition after being struck with an iron bar. Branson sustained minor injuries. Frye and Taft remain at large and are armed.
In Emory Va on September 17, Emory and Henry defeated Guilford College 7 to 0. A recovered fumble at Guilford’s fifteen yard line set up the Wasps’ decisive drive, with Gra soa ram running for the score and Young finishing for the final touchdown.
Dallas Texas September 17 1932 Beaumont wins the Texas League championship by beating Dating 4 to 2 in the third game of the playoff series. The Exporters swept all three games and earned a Dixie series matchup against Chattanooga of the Southern Association.
Paris reports Paris may seek an international inquiry into German armaments. Premier Herriot told foreign affairs committee a probe is possible, tied to Geneva disarmament talks. Officials say the move depends on upcoming League and disarmament bureau meetings.

Three Tazewell county deputy sheriffs face manslaughter indictments over the death of county jail prisoner Martin Virant found hanged in his cell after alleged severe beatings. Chicago pathologist Dr. William D. McNally testified Virant died September 1 from injuries and shock from violence by others. Bond of 100000 each was posted for Skinner Ernest Fleming and Frank Lee. arraignment planned for November term.
New York reporting that 87 year old Elihu Root was added to the roster of star orators for the Hoover Curtis campaign. The former secretary of war and secretary of state will speak one or two times, with Coolidge also slated to speak later. Several other figures list dates in Detroit St Louis Los Angeles San Francisco Knoxville and Chattanooga as campaign appearances for September and October.
In Austin on September 17 the Texas Senate voted 14 to 8 against a resolution calling for a state senate investigation of the Texas Cotton Cooperative Association. The body had earlier approved a joint committee inquiry, but the House rejected that, and the attorney general was urged to conduct the probe.
T A D Jones longtime Yale football figure wins unanimous GOP nomination to challenge John Q Tilson in Connecticut. Jones a New Haven coal dealer opposes Prohibition and favors immediate repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment and Volstead Act, pledging effort toward repeal if elected.
Mrs Minerva Brown of Norwich files a $150,000 suit in Syracuse against Paramount Publix Corp alleging defamation of character in the motion picture American Tragedy and its Dreiser based source novel. She says the film and book portray her as contemptible and poor white trash inferences.
Knoxville AP reports the Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains park commission did not elect a chairman at its meeting. The existing temporary organization led by former Knoxville mayor James A. St Stephanos Greek College, the only Greek college in the United States, will be dedicated with a colorful ceremony tomorrow at Lipwood near Gastonia. Delegations led by Ambassador Ilarambos Sitopoulos Arch Bishop Athenagacos of New York and other Greek dignitaries will attend. The Rev Asmeilianos Pascha Jakia of Charlotte serves as college president.
