The City Board kept the tax rate at 2.50 while property value rose by nearly two million dollars to 38,092,081. Total revenue is expected around 2,045,297.27 with expenditures near 2,719,185.50. Tax notices go out by October 1 for November 1 due dates.

Belgrade Yugoslavia UP Marshal Tito was revealed to have married a university student far younger than him. Invitations for a palace reception for Anthony Eden bore the heading Marshal Josip Broz Tito and Mrs Jovanka Broz. Private sources say the new Mrs Tito is about 25 while Tito is 60. State Insurance Commissioner M O Allen said he temporarily disapproved a proposed revision in automobile fire theft comprehensive and collision rates to study the changes further. Insurers have asked for a 25 percent cut in fire theft and comprehensive rates and increases in collision premiums from 3.4 to 64 percent amid broader statewide rate adjustments.
President Truman denounces Republicans led by Sen. McCarthy and Sen. Jenner for employing the big lie as a political tactic. He also critiques Dwight Eisenhower for backing the Wisconsin and Indiana incumbents. In a Citizenship Day speech, he calls for honesty from all parties and warns voters to judge by character.
