W D Lyon chairman of the Sullivan County Road Commission says he has asked the Tennessee State Highway Commission to cover two thirds of rebuilding all county main highways. He estimates $9 000 per mile with the county paying one third, totaling about $175 000 for 63 miles.

Black street clash leaves one dead in New York
Early today at 135th Street and Lennox Avenue in Harlem a clash between black and white residents left one Black man dead and two injured. A patrolman was assaulted as police from four stations were called to restore order in the neighborhood.

Merchant Charged With Possession of Whiskey in Durham
Allen Slater a well known clothing merchant in Durham was arrested on a charge of possession of whiskey. Police found the liquor in Slater's store during a raid to stop a reported hour long fist fight. He was released on a $200 bond.

81st Field Artillery Battery Recruits Visit Kingsport
Forty five men and five officers of the 81st Field Artillery led by Lieut Walter L Kluss camped in Kingsport at Shelby and Market streets on recruiting duty. They arrived from Rogersville and left for Bristol after exhibiting field life and firing training. The unit carried tents trunks and vehicles including four Ford trucks a machine shop and light plant an armored tractor two 75mm guns and more. Only three men joined during the visit and a baseball game with a local team was canceled feared.
