Death toll in Northern Ireland violence rises with ambush

Gunmen killed a British soldier and a civilian in Londonderry after a second trooper died in an ambush near Dungannon. Five soldiers were wounded as IRA violence escalates. Sgt. Martin Carroll, 26, died on guard duty near Londonderry. Sgt. James Black, 25, was wounded nearby.

Picketing Cuts Tennessee School Attendance Again

In Nashville a continuing anti-busing campaign reduces student attendance to 77 percent, down from the day before by one point and eight points from last Friday. About 70 931 of 96 000 students were in class as picketers warned of arrests for blocking entrances. In Memphis a rock festival planned for later this month is cancelled with refunds offered for 20 tickets and the promoter blaming booking issues and adverse publicity. In Nashville the state constitutional convention approved final changes and set an August 3, 1972 referendum on tax classification and other proposals, with the fate of adjournment to be decided.

Tennessee personal income rises 9.7 percent in year

UT reports income in Tennessee climbed 9.7 percent from May 1969 to May 1970 with nationwide gain at 7.1 percent. Researchers note Tennesseans earned 8.9 percent higher pay January through May while national growth was 6.3 percent. State unemployment stands at 5.9 percent with 105,500 jobless.

Seven Hospitalized In Botulism Case

Seven people from two families were hospitalized after a weekend dinner led to botulism from a home made chili sauce. They were undergoing emergency tracheotomies with four in critical condition and three in serious condition. Antitoxins were arriving from across the state as lab tests determine the botulism strain.

Hicks and White Face Off In 1971 Boston Mayor Runoff

Pontiac shutdowns mark protest against busing at GM plants

About 1,200 workers at Pontiac Motor Division and Fisher Body plants quit work in a peaceful anti busing action. Absenteeism reached 60 percent at the Fisher plant and the nearby division closed due to lack of car bodies. A UAW leader praised the park as a right to ballot on integration while courts and police weighed in on order.

Six Die as Fire Ravages Lil-Haven Nursing Home

A blaze at Lil-Haven Nursing Home in Salt Lake City killed six elderly residents and injured 11. Fire officials said the fire started on the first floor rear, raced up stairs, and was under control within 10 minutes. Only one of 18 residents escaped unhurt.

Police recover five masterworks from Venice theft

Police raided a Venice island at dawn and recovered two Bellini paintings Giambellino and three wooden panels by Bartolomeo Vivarini. The works, stolen last Tuesday from the Basilica of St John and St Paul, are described as Italy’s largest art theft in decades.
