Sumter reports wreckage sighted ten miles east of Florence near the Pee Dee River. The plane is believed to be an Eastern Air Lines liner with 22 aboard and appears to be a complete wreck.
Reports from Nanking indicate Japan will formally surrender in China this Sunday with a largely Chinese-led ceremony. Brig. Gen. Boatner notes Americans will stay in background while Chinese commanders decide how arms are laid down, as about 1,090,000 Japanese troops in China prepare to surrender.
Japanese controlled radio at Nanking used Chunghking phonograph records to guide first American transport planes to the capital for final surrender of Japanese troops in China. American pilots lacked radio aids, so the station played records as a homing signal. Japanese refused at night. 30 planes flew in by day.
