Army casualties in first weeks of invasion lower than expected

Secretary Stimson said U S Army casualties in the first three weeks of the Normandy invasion were about half the anticipated total. June casualties were 42 000 against an estimate of 81 000, with 33 083 battle casualties and the rest from accidents and illness. Navy casualties rose to 59 064, bringing combined totals to 365 758 through August 21.

RAF Mosquitos trail success over Hamburg and Arnhem raids

Despite foul weather RAF Mosquitos based in Britain attacked Hamburg docks and a Dutch transport route from Utrecht to Arnhem, with a separate raid on Emden. Heavy bombers escorted by fighters targeted Emden as well. In a recap, US Eighth Air Force aircraft claimed 135 trucks, 56 locomotives, 35 oil cars destroyed and 63 motor vehicles damaged while Thunderbolts destroyed 18 German troop coaches in northern Holland. All planes returned safely.
