A pulp style call for subscriptions announces a chance to earn $200 weekly by entering a city promotion run through The Kingsport Times. It touts prizes, commissions, and campaign offices, urging readers to nominate and recruit others before Monday noon.
The Goodwin Furniture Co building on Broad Street Kingsport was sold at public auction at Blountville courthouse for 40000. Attorney F M Kelly bid in the brick three story structure for a new Strand Theatre company planning use as a theatre starting November first. The stockholders are not yet announced. Alterations will take six weeks to convert the space for 1000 seating capacity. The building, completed in 1920, was previously occupied by Goodwin Furniture Co.
The Rialto and Gaiety theatres will reopen under Columbia Theatre Bristol management. The Gaiety opens tomorrow and the Rialto on Monday, each with local managers but directed centrally from Bristol. Renovations have been under way for weeks to show the best pictures.
Five bank robberies are reported across several states. In Springfield, masked robbers looted Jefferson State Bank, fleeing with an estimated 25,000 to 850,000 after beating Vice-President Warren Lewis. Other incidents cite burglar alarms halting thieves in Wentworth, a Brownton fight with four bandits, six bandits escaping with 12,637 in Columbia, and three bandits stealing 976 from Auburndale Savings and Loan.
The Kingsport Times offers a $15 cash reward to the person who nominates a candidate in the Timea Big Everybody Wine Subscription campaign in Sullivan Hawkins Washington County Tennessee or Scott County Virginia who becomes a winner of either first or second prize. Nomination must come from a new name not previously listed. Submit the nomination blank with proper details to the Times Campaign Department by Sept 13. If a subscription accompanies the nomination, votes equal to the subscription count are credited to the nominated candidate. The award hinges on the candidate winning either the automobile or coach prize of $200 in gold.
The V-1 submarine, largest built at Portsmouth since the Civil War, launched at the Portsmouth Navy Yard and slated for commission next October. It claims Atlantic crossing ability without fuel or supplies and leads a squad of nine sea cruisers with high speed and endurance.
Washington reports say Republican National Chairman Butler told President Coolidge the campaign outlook is satisfactory. Senator Watson of Indiana predicts a Coolidge victory. A Washington county sheriff says Eugene Snider of Mitchell Georgia was jailed on murder charges after the body of Hattie Wimberley of Augusta was found weighted down in the Ogeechee river near Agricole Georgia. The coroner's inquest adjourned and will resume seeking more evidence as two suspected liquor runners remain under investigation. The sheriff asserts the crime occurred in Washington county and that Snider's car bears bloodstains linked to the victim.
Kingsport city schools begin their year at 8 45 Monday morning September 8 with pupils expected to be ready for work. Plans keep Lincoln and Jackson grammar school lines unchanged unless overcrowding forces grade shifts, with options to adjust for the best interests of all students. Superintendent Ross N Robinson urges cooperation from parents and citizens to support a successful year, and Chapel Exercises at the high school are slated for 10 16 that morning.
Fisk University Jubilee Singers returned from a England tour with gifts including a portrait of Queen Victoria and silk stockings in a gesture dating to the groups earlier performances for Queen Victoria. Kingsport will inaugurate a new star mail route to Church Hill starting Monday. The mail car will depart Church Hill at 4 20 P M and arrive in Kingsport about 5 00 P M, then leave Kingsport at 6 20 P M to reach Church Hill and connect with the Bull's Gap train. Mail from 6 20 P M reaches Church Hill and other points toward Bull's Gap the same evening and reaches Gate City Brumet Perala and north of Church Hill the next morning to depart on rural routes. The route will also run from Bull's Gap to Rogersville the next day. The Star Route benefits Kingsport Hawkins county Bull's Gap and Scott county Va, supported by the Kingsport Business Men's Club for years. Hon B Carroll Ree ve, representative of the First Tennessee District, helped secure the route with appreciation from local residents.
Washington reports the American round the world fliers will not leave Indian Harbor Labrador before tomorrow due to a two day delay. The plan calls for a jump to Cartwright Harbor 40 miles south of Indian Harbor then to Picture NS and Boston. Major General Patrick and officials plan to meet them in Boston.
Mrs Earls of Murfreesboro received a telegram claimed from George Earls of Decatur Alabama stating he was leaving. The message appeared signed by Earls and wife questioned its authenticity noting no known relatives in Decatur and that Earls had never visited that town.
