Bristol Rotary Club hosts Kingsport guests for a banquet at the Kingsport Inn. Leaders urge a modern through road between Bristol and Kingsport, envisioning a 30 foot brick or concrete boulevard and stronger regional cooperation.
United Press dispatch reports a dysentery outbreak sweeping Poland as 80 percent of patients show symptoms. Hospitals and sanitary trains ferry thousands of sick and dying soldiers and refugees, with four thousand men received at a front station as graves line road routes.
A large Republican gathering in Kingsport organized city campaign work for forthcoming contests. Speakers included George E. Burbage Henry Ketron and Jim Miller. Judge D A Vines and John R Jennings could not attend. A Harding Taylor Reece Club was formed with Dr Joseph Pinquard as chairman and Burbage as president. J L Shoun was named secretary and treasurer for both groups. A follow up meeting is planned in about three weeks.
K W Sams undertaker has moved into the Pyle building at Market and Cherokee streets. The former Shawker Brothers site now hosts a rebuilt showroom balcony embalming room and fresh paint. The new establishment offers motor and horse drawn services with W D Armbrister assisting after closing his Broad street furniture stock.
The Roanoke Booster Club from Roanoke Virginia will visit Kingsport on Thursday morning September 9 arriving at 6 30 from Big Stone Gap on the C C O line and will depart at 8 for Johnson City. About 125 members plus their band will be in town with breakfast arranged at the Kingsport Inn. They urge buying from local merchants to keep money near home and support better schools roads and life improvements. The party will leave Roanoke on a special train and return September 10. thirty five East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia towns are on the itinerary.
New Orleans on September 3. United Press reports president Harry Keegan says a sympathy strike with the Irish is expected hourly as the union plans a meeting this evening.
Warsaw reports Bolshevik defeat expanding with a Polish communique stating a path for general advance. Poles have pushed forward from fifteen to forty miles along a front exceeding one hundred miles.
A Democratic rally is planned at Kingsport city hall at 8 o'clock Thursday evening to organize party machinery for November elections. Officers will be elected and committees formed. speakers will be named and quality oratory promised by local leaders. All Democrats in the area urged to attend.
In Portland Roosevelt says the League of Nations issue will be clear to Americans amid debates over no League or imperfect substitutes. He cites woman suffrage and warns against blind partisanship as he campaigns in Maine before moves to Waterville and Augusta.
City officials report cows roaming streets damage parkway trees in a recent spate of bark stripping. Five young trees on Watauga Street killed in weeks of disturbance. Officials favor warnings over fines and urge residents to mow and clean parkways to improve the city’s appearance.
Merchants with shops at the corner known as Greasy Corner have agreed to rename the area Five Points. They request the new name be used henceforth.
The United States submarine S-5, submerged for 36 hours, was kept barely at the surface 55 miles east of Cape Henlopen by a hole cut in her stern. Navy and army rescue craft raced to the scene as air was pumped to revive the crew of 30.
The crew of submarine 5 S were saved after 35 hours at sea and were being taken to Philadelphia aboard the Atlantus while the sub was towed. The Goethals broadcast an SOS and tapped air through the hull to avert smothering, leaving the men haggard but alive.
Paris reports the foreign office denies that President Deschainel has submitted a letter of resignation. His wife expresses confidence he can resume duties. Publications predicting resignation are seen as inevitable by some sources.
Alabama miners did little work as union officials said a general strike call would be issued very soon after today's morning meeting. The expected action could halt operations across the region with a nationwide response anticipated.
Poland refused to bind its military operations to artificial borders set by the peace conference. The Polish government said it must rely on its own strength and could pivot to prevent a Bolshevik invasion if needed. The full correspondence with the United States was released by the State Department and described as satisfactory.
Secretary Colby and Under-Secretary Davis met with President Wilson for about an hour to discuss the Polish note. Reporters were told there would likely be additional correspondence with Poland regarding the Polish advance on the border.
A Kingsport Book Club meeting formed the project to establish a public library. Members will contact the Carnegie Institute and Newark Public Library for aid, then launch a house-to-house drive with donation cards granting one year of library privileges. A yearly subscription of about one dollar will follow, and a room may be sought in the Y. M. C. A. building on Shelby Street.
A 105 year old watch, among the first models made, is showcased at Sharrett & Smith jewelry on Main Street. The silver cased piece weighs over one and a half pounds and still keeps good time despite its age, with origins in Switzerland.
