Judge Lon Y. Boyd administered the oath of office to Sullivan County Court’s new members in Blountville this morning. Times-News photographer Earl Carter documented the ceremony.
Bobby Fischer won the world chess championship when Boris Spassky telephoned his resignation in the 21st game of their $250,000 match in Reykjavik. Fischer, 29, becomes the first American world champion of modern times. Spassky's resignation was confirmed by arbiter Lothar Schmid after grappling with the formal ruling.
Sullivan County magistrates at Blountville organizational meeting elected Squire Lloyd Barr to serve as judge pro tem, defeating Kingsport magistrate Tommy Hulse 37 to B. Barr pledged to work with County Judge Lan Boyd. The body also discussed financing a juvenile halfway house, with state support after three years, and mileage allowances for magistrates amid calls for raises.
The Chicago case tells of Johnny Lindquist a boy who was returned to his natural parents after years in foster care. He lay unconscious since July 28 after a beating and died Thursday in a West Side hospital. His father William Lindquist is charged with murder. The boy had lived with the Karvaneks in Wisconsin for four years before court orders sent him back to Chicago. The Karvaneks described his fondness for the farm and fishing, and mourn his loss as they remember a good boy.
In Orlando Glenn W Turner announces plans to split his Dare To Be Great and Turner firms into 500 smaller companies to be sold or given to “little people” to comply with judges. He faces 46 counts in Florida and legal actions across 38 states and federal cases. Turner vows continued fight, predicting a surge of small operators and political ambitions by 1980.

Bill Clark, a repeated drunkenness offender, files a writ in Sullivan County Criminal Court seeking to void a 60 day sentence on grounds he is a chronic alcoholic who cannot be confined but only treated for up to 30 days. He claims he lacked attorney representation in Kingsport Sessions Court.
A Dandridge family of seven children and two adults suffers multiple injuries when their car collides head on with a truck on Highway 11-E near Greeneville. Billy Marshall, 40, dies. Harold 16 dies. Dorothy 40 and Rhonda 29 suffer serious injuries. four younger siblings are listed as fair to good. Truck driver Hunley Knight, 71, and Pamela Greer, 17, were uninjured.
Two unidentified armed men robbed the Citizens Bank Branch Office in Hampton at about 11:15 a.m. Thursday, forcing customers against a wall. One suspect, about 35, wore sunglasses and a black jacket. the other, shorter with facial scars, wore a wig, checked shirt and sunglasses. They fled in a stolen truck with approximately 3500.
