Youth to Face Preliminary in Slaying Friday
Preliminary hearing for Clifton Shoemaker, 24, charged with first degree murder in the fatal shooting of Constable Bruce Barker, tentatively set for Friday afternoon in Kingsport before Magistrate TL Mack Ketron. The warrant was sworn by Deputy Sheriff Joe B. Anderson after Shoemaker's arrest yesterday. Funeral services for Constable Barker were held today at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Carmel Church with interment in the church cemetery. pallbearers included Deputy Sheriffs W. L. Frazier, Charles F. Singer, and others. Surviving Barker include his widow, three children, parents, a sister, and several siblings. he was employed by Tennessee Eastman. Also noted is the death of Constable Frazier from a heart attack attributed to exhaustion after a long pursuit of the suspect. The story continues on page eight.

Prosecution witnesses testified as the second trial of former Tampa policemen charged with kidnapping Eugene Poulnot at Tarampa station reached the testimony stage. Violence and death marked the careers of two Frazier brothers in Scott county law enforcement. George M. Frazier died from a heart attack during a gunbattle in which a fellow officer was slain. Creed and Will Frazier were slain in 1937. their killer, John Barnett, is serving two life sentences in a Richmond prison.
