Vatican City May 4 Pope Pius X oldest living papal sovereign marks his 75th birthday with a private mass in his chapel attended by few officials his sister Donna Canilde Batti and relatives while Swiss guards and Papal gendarmes wear full dress and a Vatican flag flies over key vantage points. Telegrams of congratulation pour in from across the world directed to Cardinal Pacelli who will respond on the Pontiff's behalf. A separate celebration occurs at Desia near Lake Como where the Pope’s horse is involved in local events.
Moscow May 81 A PRA editorial in the Lavestia edition accuses Japan of plans to involve eastern Siberia in new adventures. It warns that Japanese imperialism risks angering the Soviet Union and notes the cost of past incursions. The piece asserts Soviet intentions to maintain peaceful ties while expanding mutually beneficial economic relations.
Five of the six balloons in the national balloon race were believed to be still in the air early today near Omaha Nebraska. The sixth balloon from the Oneha junior chamber of commerce entry was forced down when a leak developed in line bow pilot Pete Larsen landed in the Missouri River about ten miles north of Omaha after jettisoning ballast to stay aloft. The Chevrolet balloon with Southworth in the Missouri Legislature had also bumped the ground then cleared a row of trees and rose. A strong south wind sent the balloons from sight as they rose into the air and the United States Army entry was still up according to reports.
Nat Browne aimed to fly from Seattle to Tokyo in the Lone Star with refueling aid from Frank Brooks. After a midair refueling mishap near the takeoff point, the plane crashed into Puget Sound, Browne dislocated his shoulder and Brooks survived, with a fund-raising effort started to honor Browne’s effort despite the loss.
Amarillo Texas May 31 AP A transcontinental attempt by Harold Bromley was interrupted when his plane forced down near Amarillo after a night in midflight. Bromley resumed the flight toward California today but the Seattle Tokyo prize has a June 1 deadline and may not be claimed without a complete ocean crossing.
Rural letter carriers of the second district urged against a 10 percent reduction in post office appropriations. They met for their annual convention in Athens, naming J. M. Kipkin of Athens as president.
In St Michael Pa residents recall the May 31 1889 Johnstown flood that devastated the Conemaugh valley. The disaster, caused by the South Fork Dam breach, killed about 2300 people and cost over 10 million in damage. Communities rebuilt around steel and coal industries.

At a Hofstader committee hearing in New York City May 81 AP, J Allan Smith of Equitable Coach Co testified as an accountant outlined $73,000 plus in payments to an unnamed recipient authorized by Mayor James J Walker. Records and a detailed fund file were not introduced.
Historical ceremony in Nashville honored architect William Strickland as the Capitol building's designer and the state capital's move here. Judge John H. DeWitt noted Strickland's decade of labor, his death before completion, and the building's cost around 1.01 million dollars with convict labor excluded.
