Holiday Death Toll Rises to Seventeen in State
Tennessee entered the final day of the Memorial Day period with at least 17 deaths from accidental causes. A United Press International survey lists eight traffic deaths, six drownings, two fall fatalities, and a youth crushed to death. Named victims include 16 year old Larry Davis who drowned at Kentucky Lake near Chattanooga, 19 year old George Gundlach and 63 year old David Young among others. A Chattanooga apartment fire killed two young children, Paul Baker age 5 and Eric Baker age 9. Holland Holt, 28, died after falling from a pickup near Etowah.

TNT Loaded Train Burns in South Carolina Derailment
Authorities evacuated a two mile radius around Switzer as a 78 car Atlantic Coast Line freight derailed near Augusta to Spartanburg carrying 220000 pounds of TNT and military explosives. Firemen controlled the blaze but heat kept explosives hazardous for 36 hours. No deaths or injuries reported. Demolition team from Ft Jackson inspected wreckage and found explosives buried with no further blast danger.
