Coal mine blast in Yolande kills nine men
A Yolande Alabama mine explosion at a depth of 1000 feet killed nine workers and burned two others. Officials attributed the blast to a dynamite overcharge while rescuers battled flames. The dead include Grover Herring and seven white men plus two Negro workers. one rescuer survived uninjured. The tunnel was reportedly well sprinkled against coal dust prior to the blast.
