Severe tornadoes swept through Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana causing at least 35 deaths and more than 70 injuries. Mississippi reports 17 dead and 50 injured while Alabama lists 10 dead and 15 injured amid heavy property damage.
Eleven people died and 24 injured as severe storms hit southern Mississippi late yesterday and last night. Eight fatalities reported at Johnson Station near Brookhaven and three deaths near Greenville, with significant property damage across the region.
Reports from seven southeastern Mississippi communities detail 17 dead and 50 injured. Johnson Station reports eight dead and twelve injured, Collins records two girls killed and twelve hurt, Bay Springs notes Victor Cook and family killed, Swain plantation near Greenville three killed and twelve injured, Union eight injured, Waynesboro several killed, Sandersville several injured.
A tornado or storm in Empire, Alabama, early today left ten people dead. Victims are all white and include Billy Robbins and seven family members, Mrs. John Hayes, and a young woman named Abbott. Fifteen injured or missing are reported in the aftermath.
The state spent 16.54 million dollars on city county and state schools for the year ending June 30 1923 with breakdowns to county elementary 7.48 million county high 2.30 million and city schools 6.76 million. Normal schools reported enrollments receipts and year end balances for East Tennessee Murfreesboro and Memphis campuses with several balances and totals.
Friday May 30 designated as Poppy Day in Kingsport to honor World War II and World War I soldiers. American Legion Auxiliary will sell poppies on streets to fund grave decoration for local fallen youths. poppies offered from ten cents up. Citizens urged to participate and buy to support local graves and remembrance.
In Chicago Adolph Papritz known as George Johnson was arrested over the ransom letter demanding 74000 for 13 year old Robert Franks. He owned a car matching the vehicle near the private school and lives in Hyde Park near Franks. He claimed the arrest did not surprise him given many gray cars are being seized.
The Methodist Episcopal general conference in Springfield Mass lifted the ban on amusements not used in the name of the Lord. A minority report forbidding Sunday theatre attendance and limiting dancing and immoral performances was tabled by 469 to 295.
James D. Phelan of San Francisco, former California senator, selected to place the name of McAdoo before the Democratic national convention in New York. He is McAdoo's personal choice for the nomination.
Washington reports the Norris bill for government ownership of Muscle Shoals was reported by the Senate Agricultural Committee in a 14 to 4 vote The Ford bill motion to report was defeated 11 to 5
