In Portage Wisconsin a group of four youths robbed a drugstore taking a pack of mints. A later search linked a pocketful of stray mints to one boy, leading to the identification of all four suspects and their capture.
The Presbyterians in Montreat opened with communion and spiritual observances. The election of a moderator was delayed due to the lengthy worship. Other business included reports from stewardship, finance, missions, education, and ministerial relief, plus updates on unity talks with other Presbyterian bodies and the Federal Council of Churches.
In South Holland a bank guard opened fire during a robbery at the South Holland Trust and Savings Bank near Chicago. One robber died instantly, another was wounded, and a third was hurt escaping. Six men took part in the raid, the crime possibly linked to earlier Chicago patrol killings. A guard remained at the sedan while robbers entered as the vault opened. Militant guard fire from a bullet proof barrier killed and injured the attackers. Milton Waterman the cashier faced the blast as the robbers fled.
In Chattanooga a 17 year old, Ary the Smith Tanenek of Cave Springs Georgia, finished a letter to his mother moments before dying. He wrote Dear Mother then collapsed as a moving freight train severed both legs. Officer W A Newman watched and finished the card as the boy dictated I am feeling much better tonight. He died shortly after.

Navy surgeons cut on aboard the Synap after a 1000 mile dash to Tagus Galapagos refuge. The wounded explorer was reported doing as well as could be expected following the operation. Hale destroyer and two seaplanes delivered medical officers to aid him during his honeymoon voyage, with planes to return to Balboa at dawn.
Indianapolis May 25 two police officers were killed in the speedway tragedy. Pete Kreis of Knoxville and Bob Hahn of Chico were killed practicing for the 500 mile race when their car left the track, tore through the wall and struck a tree. The crash was one of many deaths at the speedway over twenty five years. Kreis, a veteran racer, was widely known in Knoxville and abroad. The car owned by Harry Hartz of Los Angeles was among the best entered.
A man was arrested in Enon County Va for dynamiting lines of the Appalachian Electric Power Company between Clinch and Dante. Four poles carrying 8,000 volts were blasted yesterday afternoon, and poles were reported blown Wednesday night. Bloodhounds tracked the blast trail into Dickensall County. Officials say the act aimed to deprive miners at Daric and Chiefield of power amid ongoing strike troubles in the area.
Harriman Hosiery in Tiarriman Tennessee runs at half capacity after government directives suspend a large relief order. A Wright of Knoxville, company counsel, demands NRA Administrator Johnson rule on the dispute stemming from the Blue Eagle withdrawal. About 600 workers face layoffs or reduced hours as operations stay curtailed while NRA probes continue and a Wash ington invitation lingers.
In East Chicago Indiana two policemen Martin O'Brien and Lloyd Mulvihill were machine gunned to death while on road patrol. Suspect John Dillinger linked to the killings as authorities extend the hunt across Indiana and Chicago. A watchman found the bodies in a squad car and police set up checkpoints to halt the killers as the Dillinger case deepens.
Washington May 25 Almost every senator except Huey Long agreed the Kingfish of Louisiana is conducting a one man filibuster against the tariff bill Republicans and Democrats say he vigorously opposes delaying any vote Long with no clear plan told reporters he has not reached the merits yet after making about a dozen speeches in other senators time He denies tying up the measure and insists he has not attacked the tariff policy directly.
Paraguay's army reported in disorderly retreat through Gran Chaco jungles as Bolivian forces counter attacked. Dispatches from La Paz claimed 6,000 Paraguayan soldiers were killed or wounded, with the Seventh and Eighth divisions scattered and the front in turmoil. Local authorities prepared for further probes into the fighting.
National Guard troops gained command today of the bloody battle around the Electric Auto-Lite Company's plant at Toledo Ohio. A casualty list reported two dead and continued on page six.

Fredericksville, Va. May 25. Police intensified the search for a unidentified attacker who struck a couple nearby Sunday. Fannie Kart, 28, died at a hospital after being found unconscious in Battlefields Memorial Park with her fiancé Milton J. Brown. Brown, 45, remains critical with heat injuries and cannot recall the assault. The pair were found Monday in a park mood amid long hours after the alleged attack.
