Washington May 2 The Roosevelt talks with Japanese envoy Ishii aimed at reducing armed forces and easing tensions. The president urged a nonconfrontational pace and a policy of limited armament as a path to cooperation with Germany, Britain, and others. Ishii said he could not accept the president’s definition of progress, stressing concern over China and Manchuria. The session’s outcome was watched for its effect on the Geneva conference and broader Asian conflicts.

Berlin May 24 The Associated Press reports that within the past week former Brunswick nationalist premier Werner Kuecherthal and Berlin public works commissioner Oscar Maretzky have joined the Nazis. The sweep of the Nazi revolution is described as irresistible as even Stahlhelm members abandon their independence. Propaganda minister Goebbels declares the revolution is serious and stern, not a child’s mischief, and a revolutionary renovation of German public life. The movement has moved through stages of removing rivals and aligning all sectors under centralized leadership.
The report notes generally fair conditions in Tennessee with little change expected Thursday. It mentions thundershowers in the west and interior, with no significant temperature changes from the previous day.

Atlanta May 24 Forty six thousand youths and seasoned woodsmen will be paid about 8.5 million dollars to plant trees in forests of ten southern states within six months. Over seven million goes to dependents under Roosevelt relief plan to aid unemployed. Most funds move into trade channels aiding business. Youths are largely in late teens to early twenties with homes stressed financially. Some experienced wenchmen join to ensure success. About 22,000 youths are already at army posts in conditioning or field duty. Each youth earns 30 dollars monthly from call to recruiting center, sending home 20 to 25 dollars.
