NEW YORK May 23 A million dollar pot of gold at the end of his 3800 mile rainbow awaits Captain Charles A Lindbergh as world acclaim follows his flight from New York to Paris. Offers totaling 735000 in movies and commercial contracts poured in within 24 hours. Lindbergh financed 2000 of the 20000 flight cost with his own savings. St Louis businessmen provided the rest. He may accept or reject the offers, with no clear plan yet.
Lieutenants Carr and Gillman, aboard the British steamer Donax, forced to abandon their non stop flight attempt from England to India after landing in the Persian Gulf near Bender Abbas. They drifted a wrecked plane, were unharmed, and their total air time reached about 34 hours 33 minutes, longer than Lindbergh’s New York to Paris flight.
Mrs. Lindbergh received dozens of telegrams and messages from around the world praising her son Charles Lindbergh after his trans Atlantic flight. She spoke with him by London relay and urged rest, noting the French public’s warm reception and her gratitude for their support. Luther Cain a 40 year old farmer from near Indian Springs was instantly killed in Highland Park at 1 pm when a house being moved on rollers rolled onto him. His chest was crushed one leg broken and body bruised. He left ten children and a widow survives. Cain was well known in Kingsport and vicinity. The body was taken to an undertaker for burial and funeral plans will be announced.
A swiftly produced song titled The Song of Lindbergh was printed overnight and sold in Paris streets. Vendors cried out the work, copies selling for one franc each, with lyrics set to two popular French melodies.
President Coolidge will review the United States fleet from the yacht Mayflower at Hampton Roads Virginia around June. The announcement was made today at the Navy Department.
In Wilmette near Chicago a First Congregational church held a 45 minute wolf service inviting golfers to worship. Leonard Cline novelist and playwright is charged with murdering his guest Wilfred Irwin of New York at the Mansfield country home. Cline had been hospitalized for a transfusion after the incident.
