Prince advises on when to set tobacco plants and how to space rows. He notes May 20 to June 10 as the ideal period, recommends 43 to 18 inch row spacing, and suggests DDT dusting to control flea beetles. A new county leaflet on tobacco insect and pest control is available at the County Agent's Office.
After a month of heavy rain, tobacco beds in Sullivan County show Blue Mold infection per County Agent J. W. McClain. Weather governs spread. spraying or dusting with Zineb or Ferbam is advised with specific rates for 9 by 100-foot beds and a reference to Special Publication 91 tobacco pest control.
The Sullivan Fifth Club fields notes on camp registration with a waiting list and a June 26 to 30 trip. Members present reports from Leanne Tickle Jill Riggs Becky Guinn Sherrie Scott and others cover milk shakes cross stitch aprons poultry care horse riding and entomology, with awards at County Demonstration Day.
Governor Richard Ellington is awarded a commemorative medal by The Federal Land Bank of Louisville for his leadership in Tennessee agriculture. The medal honors the Golden Anniversary of the 12 Federal Land Banks and their farmers owned system. Representatives Tilbout Parker and Sear Bureilde attended the Capitol presentation.
Tennessee Crop Reporting Service predicts a 33 bushels per acre yield for 1967, surpassing 1965 and 1966 averages. Projected 1967 production reaches 8,316,000 bushels, with grain harvest area at 252,000 acres, up significantly from last year and the five year average. April milk output hits 1.0 million pounds, eggs reach 107 million, with 5,778,000 layers and 1,854 eggs per 100 layers, reflecting changes from 1966 levels.
New panel coordinates farm aid through Sullivan County Technical Action Panel to bundle federal state and private programs for rural communities. The panel, led by H C Green, will act as a one stop source with local agencies, Farmers Home Administration, Soil Conservation Service, Extension and vocational services, and Employment Security Service supporting farmers and residents.
Harry Bowling and Lloyd Gilley of Gale City received tree farm certificates from the Natural Tunnel Soil and Water Conservation District at a monthly dinner meeting. Forester Leroy Gabbert cited their plans to manage woodlands for repeated forest crops and future harvests, noting protection from grazing and involvement in fire prevention programs. Gilley also runs a general farm. Bowling operates a department store and the tree farm. The award is sponsored by Virginia Forests Inc. and the Virginia Committee of American Forest Product Industries Inc.
A former Kingsport resident Lloyd Hawthorne was named assistant solicitor in Broward County Florida to assist County Solicitor Angeline G. Weir. Hawthorne is the son of Mr and Mrs J R Hawthorne of 106 Watauga Street.
Oak Ridge UT June 16 field day showcases UT Agricultural Experiment Station exhibits on radiation effects in crops and livestock. Tours of labs and fields accompany morning sessions with Andrew Holt UT president and Senator Albert Gore speaking in the afternoon.
