Greece Warns War If Turkey Demands Indemnity

Greek foreign minister M Alexandris warned at Lausanne that Greece will seek battle rather than pay indemnity from Turkey. He said the Greek delegation may withdraw from the Near East conference if Turkey persists. He stressed Greece seeks peace but is prepared to defend its honor with a reorganized army.

32 Bodies Recovered After Rio Grande Crossing Attempt

Mexico City reports thirty two bodies believed to be Italian and other foreigners killed during failed attempts to enter the United States. The remains were recovered from the Rio Grande near Laredo Texas, many long submerged and unidentifiable.

Stand for the Old Fashioned Gospel Mass Meeting Pledge

Bandit Leaders Are Unyielding

Washington reports pessimistic about China talks with bandit leaders over hostages. The State Department backs diplomacy via the Peking council and long as hostages remain at risk it will stay on scene to seek a hopeful path. It notes threats to kill two captives if demands aren’t met by today but sees potential unofficial foreign involvement as essential. Roy Anderson, an American with ties to bandits, may join Chinese efforts to secure release.

Will Send Cruisers to Russian Waters

London reports preparations at Chatham and Portsmouth for immediate dispatch of four light cruisers and seven mine sweepers to Russian waters. The Daily Herald claims significant Mediterranean movements this week toward the Dardanelles, possibly to the Black Sea, but no corroboration is available elsewhere. Bryan Would Make Prohibition Effective By Total Abstinence

Indianapolis Presbyterians at a popular meeting unanimously endorsed a resolution by William Jennings Bryan calling the general assembly to require every Presbyterian minister church officer and member and all denominational schools to sign a pledge of total abstinence. The plan starts with presidents and faculty in colleges and ends with every student, presented to the assembly as the meeting closed.

Settlement of Debt Is Likely

Washington reports that the Anglo American debt settlement neared completion after a debt commission meeting considered the British proposal. Treasury officials said no objectionable points were found, and Secretary Mellon stressed that the settlement’s key elements were not affected by British wording changes.

Wounded Distillery Bandit Confesses to Many Robberies

Waukegan officials say Peter Walker Marion Hall and W A Roby were arrested at Highland Park after a raid on the Samuels distillery at Deatsville Kentucky. In a signed confession Walker details a band of twenty men robbing Kentucky distilleries, binding guards, loading barrels on trucks, and shipping to Chicago. Roby wounded, may die, a doctor kidnapped and dumped on the road.
