Patro l man James Crosano was wounded by a pellet in a Memphis barricade shootout. He underwent seven hours of surgery and recalls little of the incident. Suspect Sai D Farmer, 58, charged with assault with intent to murder.
Washington UPI report says Senator Ribicoff will request FBI inquiry into Ralph Nader’s charges that GM officials and a Senate staffer altered the 1960s testimony on auto safety. Nader cites original vs published transcripts. GM disputes any improper changes and notes corrections were made to fix errors.
Washington action ends funding for the supersonic transport project as the House rejects Senate plans to reimburse airlines $58 million and keeps the program halted. Boeing and GE would receive $97.4 million under the House bill, with overall SST funding blocked pending Senate action. Senator Proxmire hails the vote as a victory for taxpayers over vested interests.
Engineers fix a new electrical fault delaying the second Mariner television satellite toward Mars to late next week at the earliest. The issue arose in the Atlas Centaur autopilot and a fuel system diode, with the 2200 pound spacecraft removed and repairs underway.
In a move tied to Allende's nationalization push, Chile takes control of El Teniente from Kennecott Copper Corp. via the Chilean Copper Corp. six representatives will assume management Saturday due to converter oven irregularities and a $5.5 million deficit. Kennecott holds 43 percent. state entities control 51 percent. The dispute widens with plans to nationalize U S copper firms and negotiate indemnities.
Washington report cites Mrs N Y who weighed 165 pounds on a 54 foot 2 inch frame and, after a diet including 10 ounces daily swordfish, developed dizziness memory loss tremors and speech difficulties. She recovered after stopping swordfish and doctors linked symptoms to mercury poisoning. Senate subcommittee considers federal fish inspection.
Turkish security forces pressed a wide house to house search for Ephraim Elrom the kidnapped Israeli consul general. Police found arms ammunition and leftist pamphlets but no trace of Elrom despite raids after a Thursday deadline from the Turkish Peoples Liberation Army.
UPI reports the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Rep. Ullman of Oregon back opposition to Nixon welfare reform. Ullman argues a guaranteed income would be inflationary and dangerous, proposing alternatives focusing on training and jobs while seeking amendment support.
Police arrested at least 45 people as they cleared a downtown crowd back to Kent State University campus for the third straight night. A motorcyclist swerved into demonstrators injuring one. Another 25 were detained at Water and Main and twenty at University Commons, including Student President Craig Morgan.
