Post Office Officials Plan Hoover Conference on Economies
Washington May 20 Officials of the Post Office Department were asked by President Hoover to meet him at his Rapidan camp for weekend conferences on economy measures. The talks follow similar meetings with War and Interior chiefs. The War plan envisions closing army posts and consolidating activities saving about 20 million dollars. Interior aims to defer nonessential capital outlays of about 4 million next year, with total three year savings near 17 million. The Post Office, employing over 360,000, faces a postal deficit around 100 million annually, with air and ocean mail contracts under review for savings and a large building program expected to lower post office leasing costs within two years.

Washington May 20 AP Better organization to keep any unjustified unsound economic burden from being forced upon labor's back was suggested today to Metal Trades council by the American Federation of Labor The federation's metal trades department held that since shortsighted and selfish employers encouraged by the advice of some of the nation's leading bankers are reducing or attempting to reduce wages active efforts should be made to organize the unorganized Such a step would enable more wage earners to make use of collective action against lower pay proposals Not in proportion Asserting the American wage earners and their dependents constitute 85 per cent of the population and it is the goods they purchase which maintain American industries the department said the present low mood was caused principally by the failure of industry to pay wages in proportion to the wealth being created Some of those who reaped inordinate profits during the so called period of prosperity are now endeavoring to force labor to bear the burden of the employers unsound and uneconomic business policies the department said The federation itself and President Green of the organization have said that labor would resist

Girls Sentenced on Arson Charge in North Carolina
In Carthage North Carolina twelve high school girls pleaded guilty to attempted arson in burning two Samarcand dormitories for delinquents. They received 15 months to five years in Raleigh state prison. Two more pleas led to conditional or suspended sentences. Judge Schenck granted probation for Rosa Mull and Margaret Pridgen.
