UN Disarmament Group Recesses Two Weeks in London

Five nations including the United States the Soviet Union Britain France and Canada pause work for a two week recess in London after 12 weeks of talks on disarmament. U S delegate James J Wadsworth says gaps have narrowed but much remains to be done and a robust safeguards system is needed to ensure disarmament progress. The subcommittees will reconvene in June to assess Western and Soviet proposals on cutbacks bans on nuclear weapons and a World disarmament agency.

Jilian Hammer son of New York magnate Dr Armand Hammer will be arraigned in Los Angeles Superior Court on a murder charge in the death of Bruce Whitlock. Bail set at 20 000 with DA not opposing. death penalty was not deemed likely if convicted. Hammer, 26, a writer for an engineering firm, said the shooting followed a May dispute over a maid gambling debt.
