Gemini 9 Space Shot Wrap-Up Presented By United Press International
Gemini 9 launches a three day mission highlighted by history’s longest spacewalk and a rendezvous with an Agena target satellite. Command pilot Thomas Stafford and Eugene Cernan head the crew. Cernan will perform a two hour and two minute spacewalk propelled by a jet backpack. Rendezvous with Agena set four hours and four minutes after launch as the mission advances toward lunar flight techniques. Launch timing set from Cape Kennedy with possible 48 hour delay. The ship carries seven experiments including Milky Way photography.

A tornado swept through Columbus injuring 11, most from flying glass, with two hurt in auto crashes. The same storm affected Phenix City Alabama and Milton Florida as part of a larger weather system. Tornado watches were issued for parts of the central plains and Midwest.

In Oxford Mississippi UPI reports attorneys for the Mississippi Freedom Party seek to delay the Democratic primaries, claiming a substantial number of Black citizens have been denied voting rights. Judge Claude Clayton dismissed one suit and heard testimony on a second action urging a delay and a court order to allow FDP candidates to run in the general election.
