The Kingsport Planning Commission will convene at 7 30 p m Thursday May 17 in the city hall council room. The Upper East Tennessee Office of Economic Opportunity board will also meet at 7 30 p m Thursday May 17 at Douglass School.
Kingsport Red Cross chapter sponsors a water safety instructors clinic on Saturday May 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central High School.
Lynn View High School music department hosts a spring concert at 7 30 p m in the auditorium. An art exhibit runs 7 to 10 p m in the gym on Thursday. Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty join the Downtown Optimists at Dobyns-Bennett gym for a Friday 1 p m show. Dobyns-Bennett bands perform spring program Muay 25 at 8 p m in the Civic Auditorium no admission. The Kingsport cast presents You're a Good Man Charlie Brown May 18 19 and 20 at the Fine Arts Center. reservations at 246 9251.
Robinson Junior High eighth and ninth grade art show runs May 14 to 18 in the front entrance from 8:30 to 3:40. Kingsport Art Guild member show at the Fine Arts Center main gallery runs Monday through Friday 1 am to 4 pm plus Saturday noon to 4 pm. Allandale Mansion on U S 11 W offers weekday tours 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 1:30 to 4:30 pm with group arrangements by calling Mrs Moran or 265-8313.
The ruling High Political Council in Phnom Penh installs a 24 member cabinet led by Prime Minister In Tam. Lon Nol remains supreme commander as Maj. Gen. Sosthene Fernandez becomes commander in chief. The move follows the March 10 1970 coup and pledges independence neutrality and peace amid ongoing fighting near Phnom Penh and along Highway 6 with heavy US air support.
In Washington the administration faces rising bipartisan opposition to bombing Cambodia as Kissinger prepares for Paris talks. The Senate panel voted to cut off funding for Cambodia and Laos, while the House previously rejected further bombing funds. An Eagleton amendment would bar use of any funds for military actions in Cambodia and Laos, signaling a push to end bombing.
An extortionist phone threat to a Northwest 747 carrying 125 people forced a diversion to Stapleton in Denver. The jet, en route to Tokyo from New York, was searched for two hours with FBI and city bomb experts and cleared. Passengers and crew were housed in hotels while two deportees were detained.
Virginia Attorney General Andrew Miller ruled that sparklers caps and pinwheels may be sold, interpreting conflicting laws to favor less explosive fireworks. He also said appointed inmate counselers need not represent prisoners in court or assist in intra prison disciplinary hearings.
Shirley Haycock 40 of Helper Utah and Bob Geedy 38 of Manti Utah spent about a day at sea in a 16 foot fiberglass canoe crossing the Atlantic. They ran aground near Topsail Beach North Carolina about 30 miles northeast of their start. Boat dock operator Brad Knight towed the craft to shore and the pair sheltered in a local beach house. They cited rudder and outrigger problems causing the circular course and seasickness.
