Jap Prime Minister was shot and killed as a fascist plot to topple the government unfolded in Tokyo. Acting Premier Kora resigned six hours later as cabinet members remained in office. Emperor Hirohito summoned the new cabinet while security forces detained government officials and a wave of building bombings followed the assassination.
In Kentucky within 36 hours five people were killed and six wounded. Victims included ML Shorter in Laurel County and L Blanton in Harlan after a domestic quarrel, Deputy Constable Saylor killed in Walling Creek, and Garreth Bowling in Knox County. A Paducah shooting left Charles Worener dead. Anderson Williams, his half brother, is charged. Dudley Sealf faces charges in the Knox incident. Continued on page six.
Hopewell May 16 The law task force ships hunt the Lindbergh baby killers at sea. Coast guard units sweep waters near the Sourland hills in a vast manhunt. Authorities believe the suspects know who abducted and killed Charles Lindbergh Jr and buried the body nearby. Continued on page five.
Washington May 16 Senator Shortridge California to day urged giving the people a chance to modify alter or repeal the eighteenth amendment. He supports initiative and referendum under California law and says the constitution allows amendment by the people. He says the eighteenth amendment remains part of the U.S. Constitution and must be upheld.
Roosevelt forces aim for 109 delegates this week as primaries and caucuses in Connecticut Kansas New Mexico and other states unfold. Developments center on pledged versus unpledged delegates and the path to a majority of 1154 with two thirds required for nomination, while Hoover looms with expected support to clinch renomination.
Rain and cooler for Tennessee west tonight with showers and cooler conditions in the east and central portions Tuesday. Virginia fair and warmer tonight with Tuesday showers and cooler Tuesday night and interior Tuesday afternoon. Readings taken at 6 p.m. daily for the preceding 24 hours.
A sunny weekend across the southern states cost seventeen lives in accidents. Nine from auto crashes, four drownings, two motorcycle deaths, one pistol, one train. North Carolina led with six fatalities. incidents occurred in Laurinburg, Charlotte, Elizabeth City, and other towns.
Senator Norris of Nebraska demanded the dismissal of W. Glover, second assistant postmaster general, for ordering Missouri postmasters to campaign for President Hoover. Norris said the president should repudiation such sentiments and that Glover would become a private citizen by nightfall. He urged the post office be run on a patriotic, business basis and protested the speech.
A non-partisan Senate group faced its first hurdle in advancing a tax cut and wartime revenue bill. Leader hopes to push the program through with an extended session, aiming for mid June adjournment. Senator Synaat predicts defeat of the Coax Amendment, then passage of the bill unchanged. An overtime schedule was proposed to begin today to accelerate the process.
Pineville Kentucky May 16 AP through the $100000 personal damage suit filed against pine cars and residents of the Southeastern Kentucky coal fields the next step in the legal fight of the American Civil Liberties Union is expected to be taken. Arthur Garfield Hays led a group warned they could not hold meetings in Pineville and then filed the suit in federal district court. Named defendants include Walter B. Smith Pineville county attorney J M Brooks mayor Pearl Osborn Pineville chief of police Walter Baker Charles Stacey Bell county deputy sheriffs Herndon J Evans Pineville newspaper publishers J A Whitaker W L Hammond Pineville businessmen and Walter Mayhew Barbourville chief of police. CAPTAIN ROBERT DOLLAR DEAD AT AGE OF 88 YEARS SAN RAFAEL Calif May 16 AP Captain Robert Dollar 88 veteran of shipping and lumber industries died at his home here after an illness of weeks The Grand Old Man of Pacific whose ships carried his name to far corners of the earth drifted away as sorrowing family watched The end was predicted by his physician after a coma of more than 86 hours The illness started with a severe cold that developed into bronchial pneumonia Mrs Dollar had been in faithful attendance since May 2
William Henry Todd a noted ship builder once rising from river heater in Wilmington to wealth died at 64 in Brooklyn from a skull fracture after accidentally tumbling down a fourteen foot stair. The medical examiner ruled the death accidental with no autopsy planned and said Todd had been recovering since January.
In Washington on May 18 the suit by the McLean children to oust Edward B McLean as co executor of the McLean estate was heard. Gaston B Means sits as witness against Mrs McLean as prosecutors push for trial of the 104000 embezzlement and larceny case. Julius Peyser, McLean's attorney, signals possible delay while prosecutors weigh further testimony including a jeweler on ransom dealings.
Oscar K. Allen, former highway commission chief and Huey Long ally, was sworn in as Louisiana governor at the new 23 story capital building. Thousands attended as the legislature moved in, ending the protracted ouster dispute sparked by Lieut. Gov. Cyr last October. Huey Long did not attend, and the dedication program was slightly altered.
Washington May 16 Speaker Garner renewed his criticism of President Hoover saying the truth is that as long as Hoover is in the White House the people will have no confidence. He denounced Senator Moses as resorting to confession while defending the president and called Hoover’s policies contradictory between limiting spending and asking for appropriations.
Judge Alect Williams of Nashville withdrew as a Democratic candidate for governor. He cited opposition to private corporate interests shaping politics and said a crowded field would empower these interests to control another administration, so he would not pursue the race further.
A damaged report notes the British steamer Roumelian severely damaged in a collision near the port with Frenen Nazaire in tow of an escort. The incident details remain sparse and the ensuing inquiries are expected to determine liability and ship status.
In Nashville on May 26, Governor Hor ton granted clemency to 30 people including Robert Eston of Sullivan county who was fined 350 and jailed three months for manufacturing liquor. He had served his sentence and cannot pay the fine. he may be employed by the sheriff after release. Bill Bowman of Carter county, convicted of transporting liquor, received a six month sentence. clemency was granted after support from local officials. Most beneficiaries were liquor offenders.
