Chicken theft ring trial ends with hung jury

In Charlotte, a jury failed to reach a verdict in the Tom Thornburg chicken theft ring case. Judge J H W Clement ordered the twelve jurors kept in custody overnight after the mistrial was declared at a local hotel.

Post Office Bids Soon for Kingsport Building

Government plans to advertise bids for the Kingsport post office about mid June. A communication to J E Afiliov, the then postmaster, notes proposals expected by mid June and work to begin promptly after contract award. Construction could start in July.

Morrow Urges State Control Of Liquor As Prohibition Repeal

Dwight W. Morrow, ambassador to Mexico and Republican senatorial hopeful, says repeal of the eighteenth amendment and state control of liquor traffic are needed. In Newark speech he calls federal prohibition deplorable and argues that overburdened states shift enforcement to a weak federal police and bake social reform burdens into one central authority. He concedes no simple fix but advocates recognizing state power as the path forward.

Sailboat Azua sinks after collision with City of Atlanta

The schooner Azua bound for Bermuda with coal was rammed and sunk early today by Savannah liner City of Atlanta, 47 miles southwest of Barnegat Light. All seven crew were rescued by the City of Atlanta, which proceeded to Savannah with bow damage above the waterline. The Aqua carried a cargo of coal and was a four master sailing from New York with 22 passengers and freight.

Census Growth Figures for Weweka Dearborn and Paterson

1930 census figures show Weweka Oklahoma at 10,023 with a rise of 8,503 or 559.4 percent. Dearborn Michigan lists 50,060 a gain of 45,124 or 1093 percent. Paterson New Jersey reports 135,287 an increase of 2,393 or 3.7 percent.

Schmeling Granted Boxing License for Sharkey Title Fight

New York May 16 AP announces Max Schmeling received a boxing license from the New York state athletic commission. The license includes approval of contracts with Madison Square Garden for Schmeling's heavyweight title bout with Jack Sharkey at Yankee Stadium on June 12 and a defense within a year if he wins the title.
